Sometimes you just can't find what your looking for and have to download in order to get it.

I looked for years for the War of the World album. The music on it is by Justin Heyward of the Moody Blues and alot of their music is on it.
You just cannot find it anywhere, and the one person who was sellimg it on Amazon wanted like $600.00 for it. I don't care how bad I want something I'm not paying that much for an album from someone I don't know and run the risk of it being scratched or whatever.
Anyway I found the album on WinMix and was able to get it downloaded and a cd cut.
I wouldn't be able to have a copy of it otherwise.

it doesn't matter if i buy the albums of the big artists (the beatles, the stones, ...) or download them. They already have a fortune (I do buy the beatles and the stones albums!)! And without the ability to download music i never would have heard of the large majority of the artists i listen to, and i wouldn't purchase their albums then anyway.

where do I get MY music? Mainly from my mind - with a bit of inspiration drawn from the music I'm into, and then a few surprises coming from the way things turn out as I write. Programmes I use? Logic, Pro Tools and Sibelius.

Where do I get OTHER PEOPLE'S music for nothing? Well, the client I use the most is WinMX. Some people don't like it as it's not the most efficient in the world but then it's far more stable than the likes of Imesh, and especially Kazaa (which is the worst piece of software I've ever seen - well not QUITE as bad as Morpheus).

Most of the time though I only download things as a sort of "try before you buy" thing as I'll end up buying the CD if I like it and deleting the files if I don't. Only exceptions are if I'm only after one or two individual tracks, or if the recording's too difficult to find on CD, but by some fluke I've managed to find an MP3. But yeah, that just about covers it I think.

I dont use downloadin programs. What i do is if i wanna buy a cd i go down to some big store where you can listen to samples of music, find a cd that i like. Go down to a store called Exclusive Company which sells cd's for a cheap price and buy it.

Bought online mainly, usually from Amazon or Ebay, sometimes directly from websites of the artists themselves or their record labels and sometimes from a very good independent/new/second hand record shop near where I live

First of all I have many MP3s and I got a lot of them from places like Napster, Kazaa, limewire, bearshare, and the king of them all was Audiogalaxy. The artist don't make much money on album sales anymore, and its not the DLs that cause that. It's the record companies. Have you not herd the story about TLC going bankrupt. They were making 9 cents an album. Split that 3 ways and each got 3 cents. The CDs cost less then $1 to make. The rest goes into the Record Companies big fat pockets.

Most mainstream artist are locked into contracts like this. A few like Dave Matthews Band had the RCs on all 4s begging them to sign and got good contracts, but it took constant touring to make this happen. Allowing tapping of live shows made the music move fast even before they made it on the radio.

Speaking of tapping!!!!! Here is how music moves in the Jam Band World and other bands catch on every day. Band allows tapping, tapper tapes the show, tapper then posts it to sites like archive.org where you can download it, unzip the files and listen/burn/give to firends.

Just look at the list of bands that allow this site to post shows http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php

Bands make money on ticket sales and merch sold at shows. If a band comes near me that I like, I go to the show. If its a real good band, or they have a kick ass show, I buy merch(CD, T-shirts, whatever).

    Others to check out:

    Any questions???
    Bob

BTW, thanx for all the other sites on here that were posted. I'll try them out.

i have over 50,000+ mp3s, all full albums too, i use newsgroups thats the way to go, none of this kazaa one song at a time crap, on newsgroups full albums are posted and theres usually 100+ cds a day up you can download, no waiting in lines, no one song at a time or anything, in the last 4 maybe 5 years ive manage to hit about 55,000 mp3s which is way more then music match radio has hehe

    Ha!

Yeah, fuck the record companies! When they start selling the cds for five bucks, which is about what they're probably worth, I'll start buying. In the meantime, I'll just steal, thank you very much.
The truth is that very little of my collection is stolen. Most is legal live recordings of jambands who support free trading and downloading of their music.
I shell out the cash (and the love) by going to tons of shows.

I have hundreds of CDs and buy them still. But alot of my music these days comes from .mp3s using peer-to-peer ala Limewire (Limewire.com)

I play in a cover band... and was always disheartened to buy a new CD for $17 just to learn that 1 song that's on the radio. A set worth of songs could easily run you $250 like that! And figure you need 3-4 current sets at all times and you'll see what I mean. Cover bands just about eek out an existance as it is. Yes sometimes the disc is really worth getting anyway, but not always. Can't beat peer-to-peer for that sort of thing and finding material the week it hits the radio.

I also like serching for a band I really like alot along with the words bootleg, live or acoustic. ~Seven
