there IS such a thing as self fulfillment. there is also such a thing as we DON'T have to destroy everything. and expecting some, ANY belief, idiology or anything else to be some kind of magic wand to do our thinking for us ISN'T using the good sense not to!

sleep with your head next to the back end of something and of course "the end" is always near. THAT 'end' anyway.

several times. i remember growing up 1984 was that magical date in the far future when the world would either turn into some kind of tecno-utopia or colapse into all out melt down.

then when the 70s came along it was going to be 93 or 96 or 97, also based on some kind of mayan or aztec calander or something.

then of course all the computers were going to rebel and make the planes crash and not print anyone's paycheck when 2000 rolled arround and when that didn't happen it was because the millenium really started in 2001. so now we've got 2012 for those looking forward to gratifying some sort of collective death wish.

i've also read historicly there was a brisk bussiness in "assention robes" arround 1900, and before that, in 1844, which, incidently something did happen. it happened over in what was then persia, now iran. the mennonites and german templars got all disappointed when it didn't happen here in the united states and the templars built a community at the base of mt carmel in israel, at the base of the Baha'i terraces, in the middle of which is the shrine of the bab, which means gate, which is the guy that happened in iran in 1844.

    well 2012 is a u.s. election year.
wonder what they'll come up with after that one ...

Yep. Just ask the Mayans, they've been saying to watch this particular date for a long, long time. I'll be in my bunker that day with plenty of ammunition, nag champa, canned food and poison toads to lick. See you then!

maybe. but i say screw this collective death wish crap.
the only thing stopping us from turning this world into the kind of paradise we'd rather be living in is our collectively convincing ourselves that we can't.

nature is a reality, it's cycles of renewal existence of life depends on. and the rocks and trees. the dust beneath our feet. the landforms. what minerals and other resources are where. how many of us there are and what people want.

yes all of these are real things.
and there are nontangable forces and beings that are real too.

but none of them are what's stopping us from having things how they could be.
none of them are twisting our arms to keep destroying ourselves
by putting trying to impress each other ahead of the kind of world
we all have to live in

so why not knock off this collective death wish crap of 'the world' is going to 'end' on such and such a day or year, and get on with building the kind of world we really WANT to live in?

I can respect your idealism for sure, and that's what we SHOULD strive for...but in the meantime, if your attitude is that blase about being prepared for whatever might happen, then just don't hustle others, who have prepared, for help when it all comes down...it's only a matter of time before something more widespread occurs. Whether or not it fits within the framework as laid out by the ancients, who knows? But didn't the general public's reaction to Hurricane Katrina illustrate how the non-prepared always try to leech off of others in their desperation? And I'm not being calloused; if I come across someone in need, I'm likely to give them what I have when it's not asked for or sought after...try to take what I have, and that's a whole other matter.

most things have two ends. one is generaly refered to as a beggining. there is a rather major tendency for one to fallow another.

as for being blaze', well if i'm gonna starve because someone beats me over the head for the last can of beans, and i can't do anything about because i'll be a helpless crotchety old fossle by then anyway, well i know good things are going to come on the other side of the big starve off, if that's what happens. given the choice between not loosing sleep over what i can't personaly do anything about, or beating my head against it, well i can think of other things i'd rather be doing. by all means be prepaired, if you can think of anything that would actualy consist of, besides decorating the breeze with euphamisims.

i'm all for being prepaired. knowing my surroundings really well. all the deer trails and access ways most people don't know about or just plain look right at and never notice.

as for stock piling supplies, well push comes to shove someone with a gun will more then likely show up to confescate them anyway. wearing the uniform and authority of one's own nation's military.

the best preperation is to chainge from creating that situation. and that we do with the priorities we actualy live by.

and the rivers WILL run clean when we run out of oil and coal, and war as we know it will surely end when we have nothing left but sticks and stones to throw at each other. it may end a lot sooner then that and the big starve back CAN be avoided.

when people stop putting trying to impress each other ahead of the conditions they and everyone else have to be surrounded by then we will have a far greater and more wonderful and lasting peace then merely an end to war.

What is this... occam is stunned.
10 points for trying to teach the kiddies.
How can so many know so little about so much?
When all would shit their pants if it seemed likely to happen.
And none even know the first thing about 'earth'
let alone how it could end.

To put it in contemporary terms... these 'let it come, wohoo'
types are like the ones from independence day. The ones on the towers
with placards saying 'welcome aliens' just before they are crisped.

AH well evolution will have it's way.

well, like those who would appearantly like to see some sort of fire works display fallowed by an eternity of irrisponsible oblivion, i too would like to see some things chainge and chainge signifigantly. unlike those who expect some diety to hand them this on a silver plater, i prefer, whether or not i'm smart enought to do so well, to give some sort of thought as to what i might like to see replace what i would be as happy as anyone to see the last of.

as mentioned, there is this rather prominant tendency for whatever ends, to be fallowed by something else. even oblivion there is no guarantee of being eternal.

at any rate, occam, i want to thank you for the great grin and happy chuckle, generaly at my own, your words brought me.

i couldn't help it, i mean they (the small minded who seek total oblivion as a way to not have to use their god or whatever given brains) keep talking about "THE" end, as if all of existence were something like a magnetic monopole.

Occam read somewhere that 'end of worlders' suffer a certain desire.
They know they will die someday. So they take control and say.
"it will happen on 'this date'
And everyone is going with me.
Why should i die and others get to keep living."

at the risk of another statement obvious to at least some of us; there is always something ending and something else beggining.

i don't really expect to ever see that chainge from being, even if the thing ending were our own entire human species, there would and will still go on things ending and beggining.

to equate even all of our species with all of existence is still, unjustifiable collective ego. i guess i'll just have to be anoyed. but it does annoy me to hear that being equated.

if a tree falls in the forrest you can bet your hind quarters the effing tree hears it, allong with all the other life forms nearby. it IS after all a FORREST. unless it's a petrified forrest. on an airless moon. in a distant solar system. with silicon based life forms who have radio telescope ears.

just because our bodies are small doesn't mean our minds have to be.

The world is sunshine, rainbows, puppy dogs, kittens, flowers and hippiedom. Kiss the world on the forehead and give everyone a big group hug for me, it'll all be made better then. No big bad meanies are gonna rain on our parade, no sir. Nothing like war, famine, pestilence, meteors, natural disasters or anything else. If we all just throw up a few solar panels and windfarms, everything will be just hunky dory.

Not. STRIVE to make the world a better place; STRIVE to acheive the ideals which you hold dear; STRIVE to live in the moment as Ram Das said, be here now; STRIVE to change that which is within yourself, and the energy will be infectious. Themnax, I LOVE your vision, but it is only that; a vision. Let's try our damndest to make it work, but let's also be prepared for whatever comes our way when it doesn't. I WANT to be wrong, I WANT you to be able to post back to me in 20 years telling me how misled I was. I will help you to make this the world we all really want. But I will also be the one coming to your aid when you need it, when things don't quite go the way we wished, if that happens. Don't be an ostrich, don't deny history, don't ingnore the prophecies of the ancients, and don't be naive. Live to be strong, praying you'll never have to resort to using that strength for anything other than helping others. Shaolin style. Dig?

Peace and best wishes to all....

"the world" IS NOT ANY one thing. the world is diversity. all of the worst AND all of the best AND all of everything else. whether any of us want it to be or not. no matter how much anyone beats there head against THAT, whether their intentions are altruistic OR tyrannical.

but the priorities we live by create the incentives that create the conditions. NOT all the beliefs and all the striving and the beating our heads against walls. the most effective thing we can do is in how we choose our priorities.

heros, well if and when and how people's choices of priorities are influenced by the stories they hear and see about them, this makes more and lasting and better chainges then their own striving itself.

i don't mean to discredit this. it is what makes the stories that influence the people possible.

i do understand what you mean about striving. it IS good to feel that you are doing something. it is a good feeling to have, at least it feels good to have it.

does it do good? does it cause good? i think it can, but it is easy to lead oneself astray, immagining it is the outward struggle that is contributing the most good.

it is a romantic temptation to immagine goodness and freedom can be defended in some kind of honorable combat. a seductively simplistic one. that has led far too many a good and altruistic intention down the garden path of tyranny.

every bit as much as completely accepting whatever happens does also.

i'm not trying to tell anyone what not to do, not in the sense of denying anyone the warrior's way. the only thing i am wishing to recomend against is not thinking. there is too much of that, of not thinking and too much of problems that exist come from that and could have been avoided and can and will be avoided in the future.
