Saint-Saens' cello concerto Elgar's cello concerto Lalo's Cello Concerto. All are amazing. I'll record some of them (without orchestra) if you don't like downloading/buying music.
Oh please, someone remove this person's apostrophe key until he learns how to use it properly. My favourite 'Cello Concerti, by the way are Shostakovich's and Walton's.
Dvorák pisses me off. I just did a gig tonight, in which his Romanze (essentially a violin concerto) was included in the programme. I'm also doing his wind serenade on thursday. He writes for winds in the same way as strings. Rather upsetting. I like his big symphonic works though.
Sax, I think you're the most nauseating snob I've ever seen on HF, and that's saying something. I hope you get cancer. Fuck you.
I like Elgar, and i don't mind Saint-Saens. They're very good. But at the moment, i'm listening to Brahms alot. Specifically his Cello Sonata Op. 38 in E minor and his Cello Sonata Op. 99 in F. Which i love.
I rather like Bach's Cello Concertos. I can play the first one on bass, it's kind of my showoff piece, and a lot of fun to play.
Bach's concertos are great. Can't really go wrong with Bach in my view, at least I've yet to come across any of J.S.'s works I dislike or think are sub-standard. A piece I've been listening to lately, although not strictly speaking a concerto, is John Tavener's 'The Protecting Veil' - I actually have two versions, one featuring Yo Yo Ma, the other Steven Isserlis, for whom the piece was written. Actually I prefer Ma's rendition. The cello is indeed a deeply expressive instrument with some amazing possibilities.
