hey all! although I wouldn't claim to be a hippy I do respect a lot of the values it stands for and I want to sum up why I am here! =) my music taste has been all over the place recently and I stumbled across some 60s woodstock music when I noticed that my favourite music genre from my late teens, ska punk, has died out and been replaced by depressing emo music. At about 17 I was really into ska punk, as was everyone else, because of it's positive mood and the good it brought out in people, and then I kinda moved on to artistic rock, then classical, then world (including oriental and african music), and then back to ska again! lol Most of my friends instead moved on to very heavy music like death metal and gothic stuff which i was quite into at maybe 14 or 15 before I grew out of it and realized I preferred things that really put something good out into the world! Seeing one of my favourite genres - ska punk - die out though made me appreciate how many times things must have changed, and made me see how youthful spirit is dying out now at an alarming rate (teenage emo music is just disturbing), and so I wanted to find out about previous generations and in particular the biggest example of youthful spirit probably of all time - Woodstock. I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the music I enjoyed listening to - I love the political lyrics and hopeful, laid back nature of the music. I have shown an interest in politics for some time (being a bit of a conspiracy theorist!) but this allowed me to view things in a different light. I also love seeing the life of a time where the youth weren't crushed by stress, depression, materialism and pressure. I'm not sure whether one of the goals of our western society was to kill off the youth's spirit and the protests, but they have certainly done it with astounding efficiency! in the modern world i feel like we are being encouraged into a constant state of stress and unease both in our personal lives and in the world as a whole by the media and our culture. To solve this we tend to rely on our materialism and leaders to survive and give up on any hope that we can make any real difference. Direct control over young people (and the population as a whole thinking about it) seems to be far weaker, but subtle, cultural control is stronger than it has ever been. anyway, that's my little story and i hope it wasn't too boring! =) take care everyone and hope to hear from you soon!!
glad to meet you.....I'm coming out of the control freak telepathic energy clouds myself now and totally relate to what you write. It was not so subtle for me. I hope you get a chance to read my post on the dreams forum titled dream about John Lennon or something like that. I really have a pyschic twist to my nature and it helps me avoid the control freaks in public. Anyways, I agree with you that some music is an emotional bummer, the artists seem to be angry. I'm going to try and produce music that I've wanted to do that brings out the calmer, more happy side of myself and people who listen to it. The other thing I researched was a festival gathering at Stonehenge a few years ago that was roadblocked by the police and they beat up some people. Yeah, the times are sure strange with some people. my negative incoming vibe link http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=191388&page=3#pid0 here are the links about the police problem in England at Stonehenge, you may already have them. See The Solstice Experiment, a hippie gathering at Stonehenge during the solstice of June every year. Links to pictures and sites, many wonderful photos of gathering from 2001-2005 http://www.infinitepossibility.org/stonehenge11 links to beanfield incident http://tashcamuk.fotopages.com/?entry=483553 This year is the the 20th anniversary of the 'Battle of the Beanfield'. A police operation called 'Operation Solstice' was initiated for trying to maintain a festival at this place, were were attacked by 1600 policemen. It's 20 years, since the major trashing of my community, travelling on the way the make the "Peoples Free Festival of Albion" at Stonehenge. Nick Davies, Home Affairs correspondent for The Observer. He wrote: "There was glass breaking, people screaming, black smoke towering out of burning caravans and everywhere there seemed to be people being bashed and flattened and pulled by the hair....men, women and children were led away, shivering, swearing, crying, bleeding, leaving their homes in pieces.....Over the years I had seen all kinds of horrible and frightening things and always managed to grin and write it. But as I left the Beanfield, for the first time, I felt sick enough to cry." Some had lost everything they had. Parents where frantic in locating their children, that had been taken into care. Vehicles had been taken to a 'pound' some 25 miles away and people had to go through further humiliation in reclaiming what was left of their homes. http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/05/312088.html welcome to hipforums, no better place I have found yet.. peace Honor Seed
hey all sorry i was quiet - had a busy week =) went to see my favourite ska punk band - [spunge] - in tonbridge and met all of them! my sis and I were hanging out with the band it ruled! anyway! lol it's such a shame music is getting so much heavier and darker - I think people are just frustrated and deeply dissatisfied with their lives. What we consider to be "youth" also seems to be shorter lived now as well - people are expected to be in a suit and going off to work by about 20 and at that point it seems like you are expected to leave all of the character traits of your youth behind. By that age now people are usually absorbed into society and do not attempt to question or challenge it. To do so would, of course, be immature! After realizing this I was really happy to discover that sites like hip forums exists as they are a really refreshing break from most of western society. =)
Gidday Hoppipolla.. welcome to the Hippest Forum with the best subject range on one forum you have ever seen! Ooo Roo from BiG MERV "I'm hippie on the inside!"
welcome to the forums my friend! I too have very similar qualities of musical tastes as yourself....i.e jumping too and fro one genre to another. I am now enjoying world music more than any other. But i think a lot of people see things the way you do. Music today does suck (atleast what there trying to make teens listen to on the radio) extremely bad, but that doesnt mean there isnt good music still around today. Just harder to find i think. If you came here looking for new music to listen to, i can suggest a short list. Im sure you will like them (especially if you like numerous genres). ----Leo Kottke (excellent guitar), --Keiko Abe(excellent marimba)--Charlie Hunter (excellent Jazz)--Jazz Mandolin Project (excellent jazz fusion) and --Michael Hedges (kind of like that one crazy band called Kenna mixed with Leo Kottke). Hope you enjoy your stay here at the forums. PEACE -Jacob Fred
hey bro welcome \\// I've got to say you've hit the nail straight on the head with your post there. Music is going down the toilet because youthful spirit is now frowned upon..Gloom an doom are, retarded as it is, popular. :S but anywayas if ur looking to get into older music definitely feel free to PM me
cheers guys for the great replies (hey that rhymes) it's great chatting to people who see the same problems that I do. I just think that true youthful spirit is so important to keep a culture fresh and stop corruption and at the moment it has been so efficiently crushed. and I know it's a little heavy but all of this has gotten me in the mood for the heaviest band in my music taste - rage against the machine! in my opinion they were one of the few good bands at Woodstock 99. there is a big difference IMO between that kind of anger (in RATM) and mindless anger or gloom and doom! =) the thing is i don't just want to learn about previous movements and listen to music I want to really make a difference myself. At the moment all I am doing is making 2 websites - one to help people with problems that are due to society (depression, anxiety, OCD etc) in the hope that i'll make people happier and stronger, and one to expose political conspiracies like secret societies - and encouraging a ska punk revival. I would like to do more in the future though... I just wish I knew what >.<
