If you only know how to knit scarves, I thought I'd share an UNBELIEVABLY easy way to knit a hat, and so long that you know how to knit a scarf, then your 90% there. Take your yarn and the right sized needles, cast on enough stitches to make a scarf roughly 8" to 10" wide. If you're crocheting, sc the width, and start your first row with dc (double crochet). Knit or crochet the pattern so the length comfortably wraps around your head, allowing it to be a bit snug. Bind/cast off. Sew the 'width' (short) ends together so you have a 'tube' shape. (diagram below) sew [.........................................this.........................................] ->tothis [.......................................part's........................................] thisend [....................................the scarf....................................] end Then, form one open end so it evenly makes a cross or X shape, and sew it up. You now have just made a toque out of an easy scarf pattern! For a quicker scarf, knit or crochet 3 strands together on thicker needles or bigger crochet hook!
I know this is easy, and I feel stupid asking, but what exactly do you mean when you say "Then, form one open end so it evenly makes a cross or X shape, and sew it up?" It's probably the simplest thing, but I'm having a hard time picturing what you mean in my head...
ok, you've already sewn the two short ends, so this now snuggly fits on your head. It's formed a circle. Put it on top of your hand. Put your hands (open) on either side and top of the band. With each thumb, push in a little, with your index fingers, push in a little. Remove from head. This will squish the circle into a cross formation. Sew. does that clear things up for you? Pretend this is the top of your circle band: (pretend it's a circle) a******b**************************************************************************************c******d Push together points a, b, c, and d together towards the center, and it should look like this: (sort of, but in real life, better) ************a**b**************c**d************You sew up this top part to keep it closed. I hope that better explains it!
Oh, oh! Now I feel really stupid. Yes, I get it now. Thanks for explaining! I'll have to try that out
there's no such thing as a stupid question, (exept for the one unasked, ofcourse) so don't feel silly for asking.
