Greetings everyone This is my first post and it is here in the veggie forum because I am new to vegetarianism. It is something I care about very much but I am still so uniformed about animal ingrediants and by products. I had no idea all of the things that go into everyday food and other items...things I would have never thought of. It sort of makes me sick...... So in my quest to learn it all and get this veggie thing down right, I am looking for all that info and in need of some good sites to visit. I have been to a few (google is so helpful) but I am thinking you all might know some great ones you could tell me about. ??? Also, I know this is probably a stupid question but.....when you go shopping for food, do you find it nessecary to look at every ingrediant in everything (besides the obvious like fruit and veggies) and how is it that you remember all the termanology and names of everything...like Hyaluronic Acid. That just doesnt jump out at me that that would be something from a slaugtherhouse. But it seems like there a million like that! So any advice, anything you have to say would be cool. Thanks!
Hi Welcome aboard, always good to meet you people. These are some of my fave links... www.cok.net www.vegweb.com/food www.cheapvegan.cjb.net www.veganoutreach.com www.veganviews.org.uk www.vegsource.com http://www.flashedmrg.com/download/veg/misc/VegLinks.html http://www.animalsuffering.com/ As fas animal ingredients go I'm not totally anal about them. I know the obvious ones and avioid them. Over here (U.K) foods are labelled suitable for vegetarians. So that's simple enough. Hope that helps, good luck
In the beginning it can all seem very confusing and buying groceries can kind of seem like going to the library, a lot of reading. You will get used to it. You'll start to get to know the products you like to use and you'll get a lot faster at reading labels of new products. Some ingredients stay tough, like your Hyaluronic Acid. I don't even think I have that on the Ingredient Definitions list on my website (http://www.veganpeace.com - check out the Links page, which will be updated with a lot more links in a few days!). Welcome to the vegetarian world by the way! Please follow your heart and go at your own pace. At the end of the day, we all have to live with ourselves.
Done! I added links for 'Veganism/Animal Rights per U.S. State'. 50 states! That was a lot of work! If anyone knows of some more links I should be adding to this or another category, please let me know.
Elle, one thing that I can suggest is to shop primarily for whole foods in as natural a state as possible. Where you will get into trouble is when you buy processed foods. When buying items that are prepackaged I always read the lables. Even bread often has animal products such as butter, whey, and cassien. (I think I spelled that wrong :H ) If you choose foods that are as close to how they would grow as possible you won't go wrong. So buy dried beans and cook them yourself, instead of canned ones. Make your own bread and sauces or carefully read the lables. Avoid the pre-packaged and over processed "quick" meals in a box, and buy organic when possible. You will find that you will save a lot of money shopping this way. Some folks have said that eating "healthy" is so much more expensive, and it is if you are using convience foods marketed toward the vegetarian/organic crowd. However, if you simplify your life and eating habits, you will find that it really doesn't take much more time to make things from scratch and it tastes soooo much better and will be easier on your budget, to boot!
