yes i used the Swastika as an example because, yes at one point in time it was a beautiful thing. but now, after a certain time period (WW2) that symbol is now recognized as a symbol of hate/genocide/racism...etc....Just like the Rebel Flag. A symbol whiched represented a group which supported slavery and bondage of black people. these are the same people who thought it was ok to lynch a black person for looking at them wrong. the Jim Crow Laws in the south were disgusting. No, not every Rebel soldier was racist. Just like not all Nazi soldiers were racist. Some were just in the wrong place. But that means nothing. The symbols both represent a culture in favor of one race over another. You should really consider taking that off of everything you have it on. Because it makes you look ignorant. Just like Neo Nazis sporting Swastikas look ignorant.

That’s very amusing for you to call me ignorant when you continue to make blanket statements, apparently, speaking on behalf of the entire world. Are you aware that the people of India still hold the Swastika scared in their culture? You can find it in Hindu temples across the country, the symbol is even used in weddings, clothes, and a bunch of other stuff. I guess they must be a little more open minded to be able to see beyond past abuses of the symbol.

Here’s another one for you based upon your flawed logic:

Hitler was responsible for the design of the Volkswagen Beetle and Volkswagen made; bombs, bazookas, and fighter plains during WW II for the Nazis--yet the Volkswagen Westfalia was the vehicle of choice when on tour with The Dead.

Are you also saying that the VW Westfalia is a symbol of hate that should be denounced by all self-respecting deadheads?

Even though our points of view are opposed, I still think you are entitled to an opinion but you can sound a lot more intelligent and make a more compelling argument when presenting facts and avoiding narrow-minded name calling and baseless blanket statements/accusations. But that may come for you with maturity.

You are hilarious and very ignorant. I love how you claim my arguements are "baseless". So the Holocaust never happened? The Jim Crow Laws never existed? There are far too many flaws in your post to address them all but, I will cover some....

The symbol used in Buddhist temples is not the same symbol. it looks similar but is placed on a different axis. The now, Nazi Swastika is a powerful symbol which evokes in many, thoughts of the Holocaust. But under your logic, its totally cool if I sport in all my threads, an iron eagle, with the swastika in its talons. thats cool. right? no!!! Because, the Swastika is a symbol which is direct threat to anyone of another race or religion.

And the VW thing. VW, very much needs to make reperations for its hand in WW2. Many, many people have tried to have them, even admit and apologize for their role...but they have refused.

and don't speak to me about intelligence. all of your arguements are weak at best. each one stretching out on a limb. Regaurdless of how you view the REBEL FLAG, it is what it is. The symbol of a group of people who wanted to secede from the Union so they could continue their dominance over the southern black population. Have you ever studied the Jim Crow period of the south?? If one has, they should of been disgusted beyond belief. If they were not, then they are a heartless racist. In the Jim Crow period, black men, women, and even children were hung for no reason. Torture, rape, and murder were common occurences south of Dixie.

Argue all you want. And sport the symbol all you want. But you look so ignorant.

I would love for you to walk thru Los Angeles, go to the corner of Normandie and have a shirt with the Rebel Flag on it. Draw some attention to yourself, I think reality might set in.

I think it's funny how some people will rant and rave about freedom of expression as well and then they may get mad about someone showing a symbol in something like their sig pic. I'm not calling solla.sollew a hypocrite because I've not read many of his other posts, but alot of people on this site would get angry about someone using the condeferate flag, yet they bitch and moan about freedom of speech and expression.

    Solla,

Okay, I stand corrected; you are the smartest 20 year old in all of Canada. So smart, in fact, that you never asked me if I’m racist or even what the symbol means to me—most likely because it’s more fun to call a person, whom you’ve never met, an ignorant, hilly-billy, racist. In the event that you are interested; I grew up in Massachusetts, I’m well educated, I’m a pieces, I like long walks on the beach, and I’m not a racist—or anything even close. Oh, I almost forgot, I’m also beyond exited for Phil’s Summer tour!

As I’m typing I’m listening to is Hard to Handle from 8/6/71—one of my personal favorites for sheer intensity.

PS: Apparently, you are the only person traumatized by the signature.

I am in total agreement here. Anyway, the confederate flag stood for more than the cut-and-dried proslavery thing from the civil war. I know what it stands for NOW for many people, just like the swastika (which by the way I would never sport on anything)....

About the TOPIC......Greensboro NC Phish show from '03. It's ALL GOOD!! :) Just came back from fishin, caught some, good deal. Peace to all.

I don't mean to get into a political debate here, but it's just as offensive to some people to sport an American flag in your sig considering the number of atrocities the American government has commited over the past few centuries. Sure, confederates had slaves. So did the union.

well i thought there would of been smarter people in this Forum....people who understood how powerful symbols are. they are more than just drawings or figures. they embody ideas and emotions. Playdead13, i don't think your racist. but your symbol is. so some people care to ignore what it symbolized, thats great. you should be smart enough to say, i want nothing to do with that time period or philosophy. this isn't about free speech. unless you are trying to say something? but only one message comes from that flag.

Massachusetts? oh, so in your white-flight neighborhoods, it must be easy to get away with such a symbol!
