Well Floyd of course, and .. hmmm yeah jimi is obvious.
Otherwise I would have to say The Idle Race and Strawberry Alarm Clock (yeah right they're not so ''groundbreaking'' but still they are soooo good ^^ (not to mention coutry joe^^)

I have every album spoken of in this thread, most every band mentioned was pretty influential in their own rites. I'd say the beatles were the most, only because they already had a huge fan base so they could promote psychedelia to the masses more easily than bands that weren't mega huge rock stars at the time. They are definitely not my favorite, not even actually a band I like that much. If you talk to people who were around then, airplane was considered one of the most influential bands cause of their content, they were just perfect for the times. I've heard the dead were just the party band back then.. but this is just what I've heard from older people.

This is the most right way of thinking, the only problem is, that if you think like this you will probably end up on classical music, since that was the music that influenced all the genres later!

In terms of the most psychedelic groundbreaking band you have to think about what ground they are breaking.

Like the 13th floor elevators broke ground in having that warbling "jug" noise.
soft machine, were the jazziest of the uk psych groups and probably broke lots of ground there too.
    hendrix is a good answer.
    beatles in terms of popularity.
procal haram and whiter shade of pale was groundbreaking.

most of the american groups were not very groundbreaking in that they mostly just played r&b or country/folk stuff. not like the more progressively minded uk groups. this is a generalisation of course.
