We all know stress is a bad thing for the body it causes all kinds of problems from migrains, addiction, insomnia, hairlose, memorylose and, heartattacke! My father is a 48 6'2" 170lb man who has lead a life full of nothing but stress! Weither it was money or his relationship with my mother he was always stressed out about something.1 month ago on a Sunday as he was mowing the lawn he clapsed as enter our house screaming of cheast pain unable to breath vomitting and his left hand drawn into his cheast. As medical assistant I knew what was happening and quickly called 911.A double by pass complete blood transfusion and temporary coma later we found out that the main artery that runs through the heart also known as the "widow maker valve" was 98% blocked the nick name comes from the fact that only 2% of people that suffer that kind of an attack live normally the heart instantly burst inside the body and you die instantly. My father was a heavy smoker sence the age 15 and drank for years to deal with the stress of everyday life.I'm telling you this because I want people to know what a danger stress can be and if anyone has any ideas for me about how to deal with this as he having to quite all these things cold turkey because of his condition post surgery I would greatly appericiate it.
i hope he does quit the body abuse.Stress is an excuse.i hope he realizes that and takes charge of his life.My mother in law refused to quit smoking. She's lying on her deathbed now,DNR papers hung up on the fridge.Seeing what she's putting my wife and her siblings through should make any parent want to quit.Don't take his excuses and don't make any for him, just let him know how you feel and that he has to quit.If not for his sake then for yours.Be selfish about it.Then stand behind him.i wish you success cause right now i'm looking at the pain that you're going through.
I had a heart attack when I was 38. Used to weigh 310 and had a type A personality. Since then, I try to live a much less stressful existence, eat healthier, and appreciate life more. My cholesterol was 170 last time I checked. (probably the veggies and vitamins) My doctor told me to implement changes gradually, replacing bad habits with good habits. (withdrawal is stressful) Approach better health as a lifestyle change, not just a bunch of rules. I'm still a big guy(not even close to 310 though) ..but can do things I couldn't do in my late 30's. I enjoy life much more than I did. I'm 46 and could run circles around my 38 y/o self. (they'd be big circles..har har) Best of luck to your family, w_o
Congrats man thats awsome! I see alot of morbidly obesce people come into where I used to work and they act so helpless like "this is all there is!" "Iam fat and am gonna die fat" and there are other alternatives.Good to hear you found yours!
Well..I wasn't exactly morbidly obese. I'm 6'2 and have the bone structure of a gorilla....so my doctor says..I lost 50 lbs and it made an incredible difference
Sorry about your dad Jane. In most cases fat is a choice and so is the failure to deal with it. I hope your dad has success in all the battles that loom on his horizon. A loving supportive family will go a ways toward helping but ultimately the impetus for change lies within him- something that your original post seemed to allude to. Beyond stress the biggest culprit is diet. People need to educate themselves what they are putting into their bodies and recognize many of the things listed in ingredients lists as the low-grade poisons they are... this includes refined sugars. It's no coincidence that there is a so-called diabetes epidemic. Just as people should take charge of their stress levels- Jane's excellent point- they also should take charge of what they eat as well as take up some form of exercise.
I understand your point okie but as someone who was a veggiehead for 2 years and whos doctor put her back on some red meat because of low blood pressure and iron I can say that sometimes meat is a necessiary evil at times. And I was on a protien and high fiber and iron diet to boot and I still had to take the b12 shot until I gave in and started eatting meat again.....
Actually my remark was "tongue-in-cheek". I didn't intend to antagonize...my sincere apologies. I avoid red meat personally. I take supplements to compensate for the lack of certain nutrients present in red meat. What works for me doesn't necessary work for everyone. We all have different nutrition needs. I would be the last to preach to anyone about diet. My own history kinda' forbids me from being judgemental about nutrition. I do sometimes just say things... I take sublingual B-12 myself...great stuff.
I looked up the amount of B12 in pill form it takes for the body to absorb enough and it is a tremendous amount, I seriously doubt you can eat enough red meat to get enough B12. I take a hi pro supplement in juice for my source and have about totally cut out red meat. Heart disease has the highest % of related deaths, higher than cancer. The only oil I cook with is corn oil, vegetable oil clogs the arteries. I used to use sunflower oil but they took it off the market shelves a few years ago to oil hi tect machinery. There are 2 kinds of stress, one is caused by others problems, that is mental to anyone caught in that trap, and the other kind of stress is caused by our own desire to be competitive and succeed but our bodies grow weary and we still push them on. This is also a mental stress of a different type. There are 2 causes of stress, one comes from other people and their expectations, the other comes from ourselves and our own self-expectations. Your dad.....Jane......has to deal with the self-expectations one now. I sleep a lot now until I get my physical prob taken care of by surgery. I try to sleep 12-14 hours a day. The immune system goes up 30 % during sleep and the body is more efficient at repairing itself than any doctor could ever hope to be. It is a strange way to live for me now, and I just got thru waking up 3 times about an hour apart in the last 3 hours. I'm going back to bed after this to try and get at least 12 hours today. There were times in my life I was so jazzed to work, it would be 24 hours later I even decided to quit. I worked hard and long at my own pottery and art biz for years. I did a number of other jobs for people I worked hard and long at. There is a lot to be said for the health benefits of exercising using hard work, particularly I noticed I can talk with someone who does 'a lot better' than someone who only does light work or very little. People who work hard are fun to be around when they relax, they seem to really be relaxing, while the other type who doesn't work hard enough seems to be complaining and can't seem to really relax. I think some of the mental stress, a lot of it comes on a hard worker because they don't socialize with the right people off hours. From my experience, I tryed socializing with others at bars who didn't do much all day on the physical output level I was at, but that was wrong. I should have sought quality not quanity and without the beer. It is not the fad these days for people to work hard for the love of it, it is all about making a buck, and dragging ass when the boss isn't around. The reason prices are so high and business is moving out of the USA. One thing about your dad, and I wish I could get him on the phone, is that he'd benefit a lot talking with strangers who have similar stories to tell. He has to get back on his feet as soon as he can BUT he also has to work slower, take time to look at the clouds and the beauty of nature while working. He has to stop and take naps and breaks whether he thinks he needs them or not. A sit down hobby that is fun to him is very worthwhile, mine at the present is getting on hipforums and doing inventory work onto the computer. http://www.vitaminlife.com/ - 1-866-998-8855 get a can of this a week for him to help him get away from the fat that clogs arteries found in red meat.......address and phone above, closed Sundays.......has all the stuff to take the craving away for protein found in red meat, takes about 2 months to get over the craving tho.......I still have some red meat once in a while.
