Well, I decided I didn't like what I had written, and you can't un-click the "submit reply" button....
what i really wonder is what damage has living in a christian country done to me? probably more than you realise Sultan. I think alot of people who've outgrown the religion they were raised in still carry alot of residual brainwashing that they may not even be aware of. fear of "the devil" and hell being a prime example. I just spent a solid year studying the bible (several different versions +the gnostic texts+ the history of the religion itself) and debating christians (if you call talking to someone who folds their arms and says "fuck you, I'm right so there" debating) and I've found out some interesting things; You know what the Old testament says about hell? Nothing . It's not in there. there are some references to a place called "sheol" but it's always described as a state of mind endured by the living (not a place of punishment for the dead). As far as the devil goes the only place I've seen him mentioned is in the book of Job, and there he's desrcibed as coming and going in heaven as he pleases, making bets with god as if they were drinking buddies. So here's the question; where did this theology of eternal damnation come from? Not the Old testament, that's for sure. Most likely it was borrowed from the Persians (Zorastorism) and given a Jewish spin in the apochraphal texts (stories written in the 400 year interum between the last book of the OT and the gospels) and woven into Judaism so that by the time the gospels were written it had become part of jewish folklore (not theology). so here's the point; if christians claim the bible is the word of God, but they're basing at least half of the main premise for their doctrine on something that isn't in the bible then whether or not the bible is full of shit their religion obviously is. see what I'm saying?
