I'm not sure about this, I was wondering if I could get an answer from anyone here. I heard that Jesus' REAL name was JOSHUA,....but then it was changed through the years into different languages and misinterpreted into Jesus. I know I don't have real proof of this and I'M NOT SAYING I SUPPORT IT I just wanted to know if anyone has heard of this "story".

    Hey Nina,

'Jesus' is not a Hebrew name. His Hebraic name is Yeshua, or Yahshua, which is pronounced similar to 'Joshua", but with a 'y' sound. The NT was written in Greek and the Greek word used for Yeshua was 'Isous' (spelling?) which then translated and translated became Jesus. It had also been Jesu, at one stage before that, and it is 'Jesu' in numerous African dialects, i.e. Botswanian.

It really illustrates just how laughable mixed translation, miscontextualization and the solidity of the bible can be at times. I believe in Jesus (Yeshua) but rarely call him by the Yeshua name. I did for a while when I frist learned about it all, as I felt that I was calling him a name that was't his. But in the end, as a speaker of English I chose to accept the language God used to communicate the gospel to me...so I call him Jesus now.

So what you have said is true and in no way inaccurate.

Heron, I gotta disagree with you. I've heard it different, that Yeshua is the same name as Joshua: http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=jesus

The thing is, Hebrew, and I think English itself until a few centuries ago, did not have the letter J. This is why Yahweh was translated as Jehovah; it was translated by Germans, who substitute a V for a W in their language. Things like this really do have to make you laugh, as MeMilesAway said.

On a History Channel show, they said that during the Roman occupation of Israel, many women were naming their sons after great warriors from the past, Joshua being one of them, as a way of showing their opposition to Rome and sort of as a blessing/hope for their sons to free them.

    Hi Nina123 :)

I mentioned this matter about changing the names in some parts of my threads you can find it in these links, for example when they changed the name of Allah to God and Lord Allah's name in an old Bible! Photostat

Also, (in the following link post#1 and 2 talk about this matter too (J) ) Unlocking 'Y.H.W.H' + ''Jehovah'' code! The puzzle of their meaning and reality!
The Arabic Bible doesn't call Jesus (Jesus) even the arab Christians they call him (Yasoo'a) ==> the Transliteration could be wrong , Joseph is Yosef (YUSUF), also the arabic Bible call him Yosef (YUSUF)...
And here is an enjoyable and interesting video about Jesus' name, in the beginning the lecturer will talk about Muhammad's name then he will move to Jesus and other corrupted names like (Peter, Christ etc) enjoy!

I think it's interesting that two of the disciples have greek names, Andrew and Phillip, for which there aren't any hebrew equivalents (note: haven't looked into this in depth so I could be wrong).

    wonder how that happened.

    Hi Hikaru :)
    IMO yes it does,
This video tells why [ in the beginning the lecturer will talk about Muhammad's name then he will move to Jesus and other corrupted names like (Peter, Christ etc) ]
Briefly:we will loose many important facts /things and the meaning of them (words names etc) by doing so (changing them) + we don't have the right to change others' name  ( I think changing God's name is Blasphemy)

    (= *Peace and love* =)
    Yours Sincerely,

    This is from your link:

    ESUS

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: Theology, Biblical

    Pronounced: JEE-zus Ê [key]

English form of ?????? (Iesous), which was the Greek form of the Aramaic name ??????? (Yeshu'a). Yeshu'a is itself a contracted form of Yehoshu'a (see JOSHUA). Yeshua ben Yoseph, better known as Jesus Christ, was the central figure of the New Testament and the source of the Christian religion. The four Gospels state that he was the son of God and the Virgin Mary who fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah. He preached for three years before being crucified in Jerusalem.

my name is joshua, i knew what yehoshua and yeshua was when i was 8.
