Although this is a fiction novel, it would definitely classifed under hippy book. It is by T.C. Boyle I believe off hand. Beautiful book about living in a commune in Northern California then uprooting to Alaska. At first I thought it to be a bit slow but then I got really into it and before I knew it, I read the whole thing. Anybody else read this book?
I absolutely fell in love with this book. I was a bit the same... I have a bad habit of judging a books by it's cover (this only applies with books by the way- -- I love all people no matter what they look like!) and the cover to Drop City was bland and it looked like a huge hard to handle book. But, i began to read it anyway and was swept into their world, i felt like an outsider looking in on two opposite worlds colliding. It was written so well, so objectively, so as a reader you could really get a good understanding of who these people were... not as hippies, or as country bumpkins, or as hunters, or whatever the stereotype was, but as human beings. Definitely recommend it!!!
Oh, and PS., the copy of Drop City that I read had a black and white cover of a snowcovered forest... not a bunch of naked hippies shaping a mandala! Had that have been the case, I probably would have had no hesitations picking it up
There´re threads about the book... http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112011 http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32897 I really liked it! I might read it in german, too... so that I´ll understand everything that time lol
I posted this somewhere already but I'll say it again... I totally suggest checking this book out from the library as it is 444 pages of shallow, filthy, bleakness! The same jealousies, characters and plot line from cover to cover! boring! I was sorely disappointed! ...and angry and sad that I was dissappointed 'cause I really wanted to like this book! furthermore... I would recommend getting this book for your children if you DON'T want them to be hippies. furthermore... What a downer.
I wasn't blown away, but I did get caught up in all the drama, wanting to see what is going to happen next. ....allright it was great
what's there to 'figure out'? Ronnie is just as jealous of that craaaazy girl and guy on page 444 as he was on page 1... or 10 or where ever on that bleek plot line they meet each other ...in the tree house, right? The book is also just filled with descriptions of filth and destitude. utter hypocracy and cliches. In my humble opinion...there are much MUCH better books out there about hip culture. ...not to be a prick or nothin' but ... it's a really depressing book!
I'm reading that book right now. It's really interesting so far. I think the critics in the book aren't so much about the hippy philosophy. I mean it's rather about the unability of many people to live the hippy way. Especially in large groups there are always people, who spoil everything because they only want to profit. For me the book points out the problems why we don't live in peace and happyness today. (Hope you can figure out what I mean... Sometimes english can be very difficult )
This book is way cool. I think it's awesome, not the absolute best but then again your talkin to a girl that sill reads books with pictures. Drop city holds my intrest and I'm pretty spacy so that's hard to do. I have the one with the guy on top of the girl in floral pants on the cover. i give this bood an A...........but then again I'm not a critic.
Now I've finished drop city. I didn't like the end of the book. I think the beginning of the book is much better then the end. To me the end seems very constructed.
read it . Typical TC Boyle with a "oh my god I'm on deadline" ending. I think its just his style to abruptly end (altho this was a slightly less bumpy landing) as if he's out of paper, or time. even with short stories. SPOILER****** No happy endings 100 percent here. (granted, I thought Marco was a goner and was thinking TC, you ass, here's a likable character...) SPOILER DONE******* that said, he's interesting enough that I read most of them.
