yea. im going away for the next summer before college with my gf and we need to choose the best vehicle for the trip. we plan on sleeping in the vehicle and using it to take us from place to place. so this means its going to have to be able to store clothing, some food and drinks, and a mattress. also. gas mileage is a huge issue as well. i want to get the best car that uses the best amount of gas and capable of doing what it needs to do in its highest possible form. if you could help me pick then thatd be great

I have a big red 92 Volvo that sleeps 4 comfortably, if the two in the back don't mind leaning on each other. The Turbo Turtle is huge and could be easily converted into living quarters for two. Plus, he runs like a champ, if you take good care of him. Just watch your fuses. There's plenty of storage space, and, if you need more, get a station wagon.

    Have fun!

get a small rv. it has everything you mentioned above. plus they are considered homes then and the fuzz cant search it without a warrant.

Well, a lot of this depends on where you wish to travel. There are limited large vehicles outside of minivans that get decent gas mileage - some station wagons do, but they still don't offer that much space.

Personally, I'd sacrifice your desire for good gas mileage and get maybe like a toyota pick up with a cap on the back. Plenty of space, plus, you may want to travel through national parks and such where four wheel drive comes in handy.

im thinking strongly about getting a newer truck that gets good gas mileage. so probably not one of the trucks that fairly large, but the smaller type. like an s10 or ranger or something of that nature. im sure the gas mileage would be much better in an s10 4cyl than in a chevy silverado 6 or 8cyl. anyways after getting on of those trucks i stated about or one like it. ill get one of the small camper top shell things. like the Leer or Gemtop camper shells and put a carpeting in the bed of the truck as well as a matress and whatever else i like. lol. yea but its have to be like a crew cab or at least extended cab so we can put like out bags and stuff in the car with us as well as a few things in the bed. anyways if yall dont understand what i mean heres some pictures

Get a used one that's like a year old so you don't have to pay as much, but it's just as good. Rental places always get rid of their cars after a couple years and you can buy them at dealers. It's a good deal, usually.

If you're going to go the pickup truck with a cap idea, may I suggest that you also consider Toyota ('89 or newer) as well as the Nissan hardbody or frontier. These are quite dependable. You may also wish to consider the VW Jetta or Passat wagons with the TDI, they get close to 50mpg. Unfortunately, they're also very hard to come by.

well really my main concern is this..

    reliable
fairly spacious ( extended cab )
long and wide enough for two ppl to sleep on a matress with room for little storage
    and good gas mileage

hate too burst your bubble my man but good gas mileage and pick up truck are not synonymous, even a 4 cylander 2 wheel drive pick up.

You will be lucky, especially with weight in the vehicle (your matress, supplies etc,) to get 20 miles per gallon on the highway.

The Dodge Dakota is not necessairly a bad truck, but you may want to look at the Toyota pickups or the Nissan hardbodies or Frontiers, preferably the former and preferably with the inline-4 cylinder engines. They are much better built than just about any American brand pickup and have been known to last for several hundred thousand miles before needing any major engine work-especially if you keep up on the maintenance. Stay away from the Chevy Astro and GMC Safari vans like the plague! They are notorious for slack quality control! You're better off with a Honda Odyssey or a Toyota (Previa or other) van if you can afford one or find one.

    Hello,

I just got back from seattle to colorado, and I recently bought a toyota van 1985 did some painting on it and hung some curtians on bungees and gased and went 6000 miles without a fault it goes the speed limit only lol and gets 25 mpg hauling 1000 pounds of hiking and recon gear. I left colorado went to seattle then too oregon and back to colorado then to seattle again and back I am getting ready to treck my first solo to florida for a mushroom hunt for a month. My vote is for the toyota $500. good luck

I have heard from people who've owned them mention that they tend to be very high maintenance. I'll refer to 'start' as well as my previous post. I'd get a Chrysler minivan before I got an Astro or Safari-provided it didn't have the electronic automatic overdrive-which came standard on the Grand Caravans and Grand Voyagers beginning around 1990.
