    Ello there,

Im in a similar position. Just finished my creative writing degree. I would recommend submitting work to small presses, and poetry magazines.

I had a quick look on the internet and found this list

    http://www.poetrysociety.org/psa-links.php

Just make sure you read the submission guidelines - and be patient while waiting for some kind of reply.

I had a couple of things published, but nothing massive, as long as by the time I reach my 40s, I feel like im getting somewhere, I don't mind. You can really rush these things can you.

anyway. Just thought I would say hello. Don't normally post on here that much.

    Keep at it.

    Dame

And one more thing - don't discourage yourself because you got rejected! The reason they reject you is because they get tired after reviewing 1000s of letters, then they forget about you, so thi sis why you will actually get the rejection letter after five months or something. Just keep going! I got three publications in a year!

I started publishing a book of my poetry on www.lulu.com a self publishing site. I also have some of my poetry on a few different sites and was published a long time ago in a Pagan magazine{which only lasted one issue to my knowledge unfortunately} and a few Pagan zines{print that is}. I have been rejected whenever I submitted my work to paying markets. That kind of sucked but at least I've been published elsewhere even though they were non paying. I also have a poetry site on http://poetrypoem.com but am no longer doing anything with it. I will delete it sometime because I now upload my work to my deviant art page instead. I also have a poetry page on my personal site that I will be updating. Anyway, good luck!

yeah, I've heard of lulu publishing, too. The reason why publishers reject you is because they can't make money out of poetry. Same for agents. You have to be well known as Shakespeare to get some pay. Only self-publishing and a good promotion is going to help, but you have to have the money to pay the book publishing and printing. But before that, know what your target audience is and where they go to buy your type of poetry.

Well, there are paid poetry markets. I submitted my work to a few magazines that pay you if your poetry is accepted as well as a website that does the same. You don't have to be well known actually to get paid for your poetry. These magazines don't only accept the work of well known poets,if they ever have at all. There is a zine that my Husband recieves in the mail which accepts poetry and prose. He also writes and gets $20 whenever his work is published in it. Not much but it's something.:) Like I said,I am self publishing thru lulu. It's free to publish your work there. Lulu gets a percentage though. Later on if I want to sell my book at places like amazon for one example,I'll need to buy an ISBN number. But I am starting with lulu and people would be downloading and printing my book from their computers when they purchase it from there. I write dark,Pagan,Earthy/Goddess based poetry and just whatever comes into my mind. I don't want to limit myself. I've also written a few poems for Jim Morrison. He's my favorite poet and singer.:) Well, thanx for the advice.

I'll check it out, but two days ago I had a professor reviewing my poetry and he said he was going to offer it to a self-publishing company. But, thanks, I'll check it out.

hippywitch, It's good if you also want to join writers.net. But you have to be under your real name cause big buddies are over there. You'll get to know a lot of stuff. Seriously.

It's extremely hard to get poetry published. Your best chance to publish is to find local poetry journals. University magazines may also publish your poems. You could also try self publishing, meaning you do all the legwork.

These options are great if you are passionate about your poetry and don't care about money. YOU WILL NEED A DAY JOB. Unfortunately, not enough people read poetry for it to be a big enough money spinner.

Of course, there are some exceptions. Good luck, and keep writing.

Well,it actually isn't always hard to get poetry published with the non-paying publications. I know you may have been only referring to the paying markets though. I personally haven't been paid for any of my poetry yet but I have been published in various places that didn't pay. Like I said in an earlier post,my Husband submits his work to a offline zine and whenever he is published, they pay him $20. Not much but it's something. I'd be glad.:) I am self publishing as well like I mentioned earlier here. I started that a long time ago on lulu.com. I don't have to pay anything on lulu. They do get a percentage of my profits though of course. Or will. Of course,I will want to go further than lulu down the road sometime when I can.:)
