The sound isn't the music. Look at innovative bands like The Clash who used synthesizers. The music is the message not the sound, and punk music's message has been fucking destroyed by Hot Topic, MTV, and trendy punk accessories like patches and safety pins. You want punk music for today, check out Death By Stereo, Suicide Machines, or Anti-Flag; these are bands that thrive on the political and social message of the movement have stayed true. To be a punk nowadays is nearly impossible. The pc world has made the hardcore edge of punk music became just another sound. Well, fuck that, too many good bands and even better song writers have been influenced by true punk music like Kurt Cobain. The reality is, that once a young adolescent realizes what punk music is saying, which is usually that you're are being lied to by the people you trust(gov't, church, society) in some way or another. Punk makes you question your own psychological acceptance of these theories of government policy, religious belief, and social significance. If all bands sound the same, then the music has died and industry has prevailed in mainlining punk.
Well punk was never a movement to begin with. The only "political message" that the sex pistols, for example, had was essentially "hey, shove it up your ass!". You've got modern "anarcho punk" like anti-flag, who started off as a high-school garge band in Pittsburgh. But their only "message" is "hey, fuck all you rich phoney assholes!" The idea the punk has some kind of political message is throughly an artifact of pop-punk. True punk is not now and never was about any kind of big political message, there is simply no evidence at all to support that claim. It was about doing your own thing and fuck anybody who says you can't.
>.< reading this was really entertaining, brings back memories of my days in middle school. thanks for elevating my mood guys! peace love ganja Trip.
I never said the message was the same, or even always for a political reason. It is a movement against other movements was what I was trying to say. One kid sees our President and thinks he deserves a grapefruit sized bullethole in his head, while another wants to beat the everliving piss out of some Nazi Punks. Punk goes against the grain of whatever it can get it's hands on. So don't you think the greatest thing that Punk music wanted to change was our political statis? What did so many punk bands in the 80s sing about? Bringing down Reagan, right. I might have put a too black and white face on the issue, and for that I was trying to make a point. But the music, people, and "movement" have all changed while gov't bullshit is still a top contender of complaint. A political message is not spelled out, but is most definately present in any early punk rocker's mentality, Fuck them all.
Pistols were Nhillist "hey, fuck all you rich phoney assholes!" - clearly a sentiment of the left clash were anti-thatcher, and pro socialist Fingers had strong political messages about ulster and ireland etc etc
punk is the shit if you want to find true punk be true punk, because there ain't much true punk out there, or at least couldn't find it :H. I guess there are punk there nihilistic bands, 'political' bands (mostly anti anything) and sell out bands. but it's hard to defy them without getting dogmatic and implausible
man today i was at this place, and there were some bands playing...but anyways. this guy gets up on stage with bright pink hair, a chain past his knees, and he looks punk overall...and then with a little wimpy voice, he announces their first song is going to be a blink song. what the fuck man! you could tell he was not punk, just by the way he acted, not just the fact that he was playing blink... nu punk has got people thinking that just because they dress punk means that they are punk. old punk was not about the dress, it was about the mentality overall. so next time you see someone who looks punk, thats not what its about. "Punk ain't no religious cult Punk means thinking for yourself You ain't hardcore cos you spike your hair When a jock still lives inside your head" nazi punks fuck off, dead kennedys. applies to the new false punks too in my oppinion.
fuck them who gives a shit? dont give a fuck about what is real punk or real whatthefuckever just listen to whatever shit you want
well.. sorry I haven't read all its too much.. I see punk only as a style of music, rock is not a political message either is it? very recently I came across some nice stuff, this guy Pete Doherty used to have a good band before he got kicked out of it for doing too much drugs.. for anyone into nice old time sounding relaxing punk/ska rhythms, the Libertines is some good stuff
of course i give anyone the right to listen to whatever (shit ) they want, but....if i'm to participate in this discussion, here goes my opinion: MAAAAN these bands of today suck not that i was even alive during the late 70s (and later on still too young...), but if you think of bands like the dead kennedies or the clash or the slits or black flag or conflict or the even the ramones and compare 'em to the scene today - isn't the difference just fucking obvious? it's not primarily the music i listen to - although i like quite a few bands, but i wouldn't consider myself an *expert* but the change since the nineties and all these fucking boy bands that label themselves punk --- euurgh it makes me sick yes i hate labelling too - but if you're going to use a label, AT LEAST you should know what it stands for.....it would also come across quite strange if - for example - marilyn manson announced he's a republican voter...or if jim morrison had said he was pro-life....blablah just.not.authentic i was in spain last summer barcelona, to be exact and there *the scene* is still quite alive & kicking, thanks to the squatting movement...no big names, but actions speak for themselves OKUPA Y RESISTA
lol don't get a free opinion the wrong way, my friend as said... ..this is the way i see the so-called punk-scene of today...and imho it currently lacks ........................something.like.authencity just my 2cents, in *real-life* it doesn't really bother me that much/(at all? lol) as it might seem based on this posting... ..anywayz...much ado & words bout nothing; but if asked, this is the way i see it
I agree with a few people on here nu punk sucks ass -however- punk ideologies have always been pretty fucked and fake (but at least it was good music before) -but- they didn't pretend to be another form of music -yet- most of them never really gave a shit about what they preached -and- there are always going to be crappy sell outs in the music indutstry -and- unfortunately they are going to end up rich and famous -while- the truly talented bands remain underground and barely heard of -so- you should not ravel in how shitty mainstream music is today -but instead- support your underground artists more strongly
