WASHINGTON, 14 June 2006 — An Internet video showing a Marine singing a song glorifying the killing of Iraqi children was condemned yesterday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as “clearly inappropriate”.
CAIR called for an investigation after drawing attention to the video, which it says was posted in March on a website called YouTube.com and drew 50,000 hits.Entitled “Marine-Hadji-Girl,” the four-minute video clip shows a young man, thought to be a Marine, wearing a green T-shirt, camouflage pants and combat boots on stage, playing a guitar and singing to an audience who are heard wildly laughing and cheering to the lyrics. “I grabbed her little sister and put her in front of me. As the bullets began to fly, the blood sprayed from between her eyes, and then I laughed maniacally — I blew those little... to eternity — they should have known they were... with the Marines,” CAIR quotes the lyrics sung by the soldier.The clip has now been removed from the Internet site that originally posted it. In recent weeks the US Marine Corps has been beset with controversy over the deliberate killings of civilians in Iraq, including the death of 24 people in the town of Haditha in November.

CAIR’s executive director Nihad Awad called on Pentagon officials and members of Congress to investigate the video. “Given the recent allegations that US Marines massacred Iraqi civilians in Haditha and other areas, we need to determine if this video is what it purports to be,” said Awad.“The video that was posted anonymously is clearly inappropriate and contrary to the high standards expected of all Marines,” said Lt. The video, called “hadji girl,” purports to be a “marine in iraq [sic] singing a song about hadji.” (A “Hajji” is a person who has made the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, but the term has often been used as a pejorative by U.S. troops in Iraq.)

In a statement, the Marine Corps said: "The Marine Corps has recently been made aware of a video posted to a website that purports to show a Marine singing an insensitive song about Iraqis. The video has subsequently been removed from the website. The video that was posted anonymously is clearly inappropriate and contrary to the high standards expected of all Marines. The video is not reflective of the tremendous sacrifices and dedication demonstrated, on a daily basis, by tens of thousands of Marines who have assisted the Iraqi people in gaining their freedom. We agree with the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations that the inappropriate actions of a few individuals should not tarnish the reputation of all American military personnel." “We welcome the Marine Corps statement, but we also expect that those who participated in this incident will be identified and disciplined appropriately,” said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. I just found a post at this blog that someone purports to knowing the identity of the marine.

I happen to know this Marine very well. We have known each other for 7 years and have served our entire USMC career together. And this i can tell you. He saw the movie Team America World Police while serving in Iraq. At this time he was extremly stressed out with being overseas and seeing as we all do, our brothers and sisters K.I.A. every day and not being able to do a damn thing about it. He is not an Infantry man and therefore has no way to directly fight against the terrorism that has affected so many in the world. So one night while sitting around with some friends he made this song up. It has no relevence to any actual events or any actual individuals. The “Hadji Girl” and her family can even be said to symbolise any and all who attack innocents and/or lead false lives for the purpose of creating a dangerous situation for others. i.e. the terrorists who live in other countries for YEARS and have whole lives as citizens and then one day, become martyrs, and take dozens of innocent people with them, on the bus or the train or on an airline. This song was never intended to go beyond this Marine and his circle of friends. He made a mistake by performing it one night in front of some peers and one individual recorded it. This individual of his OWN accord, brought it back to the states WITHOUT permission and posted it on youtube. It should have been pulled, yes. But we all make mistakes. We are in the process of attempting to get this video and all lyrics pulled from the Web. If you know of a place it has been posted please send an email to stophgirl@gmail.com with the website info.
We are sorry that this has gotten out and offended so many people, but to be quite honest, this was simply a man blowing off steam in a very stressful situation. We’ve all said things we don’t mean when we are angry. Think of all the people that would be offended if some of what you said made its way onto the web. Thank You and Semper Fidelis.

A US Marine Corps corporal seen in a video singing about killing members of an Iraqi family says the song was a joke and not tied to allegations that marines killed as many as two dozen unarmed civilians in Haditha in November last year. In a four-minute video called Hadji Girl, a singer who appears to be a marine tells a cheering audience about gunning down members of an Iraqi woman's family after they confront him with automatic weapons. Corporal Joshua Belile said he had not meant to cause offence. "It's a song I made up and it was supposed to be funny, based on a catchy line of a movie," he said. "I apologise for any feelings that may have been hurt in the Muslim community. (*Stevens: Thank you) This is in no way, shape or form related to the events that happened at Haditha. The song was written long before the events happened." A marine spokesman said the corps was aware of a video that "purports to show a marine singing an insensitive song about Iraqis", and officers were investigating.Lieutenant-Colonel Scott Fazekas said the song was "inappropriate and contrary to the high standards expected of all marines". In an interview with a US newspaper, Cpl Belile, 23, said he wrote Hadji Girl in September 2005 while in Iraq. He said his friends enjoyed the song and pushed him on stage with his guitar. Someone filmed the performance and posted it on the internet. The song tells the story of a marine who falls in love with an Iraqi girl and is taken to meet her family. The girl's family shoots her and attacks the marine, who uses her younger sister as a shield and watches blood spray from her head. He then sings about blowing the father and brother "to eternity". Nihad Awad, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said that in light of recent allegations of atrocities committed by marines in Iraq, the video should face Pentagon and Congress inquiries.

CAIRO — The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the largest US Muslim advocacy group, has welcomed an apology by US Marine Corporal Joshua Belile for a song glorifying the killing of Iraqi civilians."We welcome Corporal Belile's apology and will leave it to military authorities to determine whether any disciplinary action is warranted," CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement emailed to IslamOnline.net.Belile told the Jacksonville Daily News on Wednesday, June 14, his four-minute video posted on the Internet, "Hadji Girl," was only intended as a joke."This song was written in good humor and not aimed at any party, foreign or domestic," he said."I apologize for any feelings that may have been hurt in the Muslim community," he told the local newspaper.Singing of an Iraqi girl he met during an attack, the lyrics go: "I grabbed her little sister and put her in front of me. Insensitivity

The US Marine Corps has described the song as "inappropriate" and has opened a preliminary investigation into the incident.The US Muslim advocacy group said its criticism was never to target an individual Marine "but instead to address the larger issue of insensitivity to the suffering of Iraqi civilians."Awad renewed calls for congressional hearings on the behavior of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.The Pentagon decided on Thursday, April 1, to give ethic training to all its troops in Iraq following the Haditha massacre.Accusations that trigger-happy US soldiers often kill civilians and that little disciplinary action has resulted in the few cases investigated continues to infuriate Iraqis.A British soldier has quit the army in disgust of the "illegal and immoral" practices of the US-led forces in Iraq."As far as the Americans were concerned, the Iraqi people were sub-human, untermenschen," Ben Griffin, a trooper in the Special Air Service's counter-terrorist team, told the Telegraph on Sunday, March 12, using the term used by the Nazis to describe Jews and Russians.

This is a symptom of how coalition forces view the people that they occupy. I hope somehow the US administration and the civilian forces that they have outsourced many of their support services to, will wake up and start to view all people as worthy of respect and concern.

Although the video speaks for itself, WAS SO CLEAR, you read:

American stations, including CBS, did not show the moment of the killing.
"Look at this old man who was slain by them," said Ahmed Khalil, 40, as he watched the video in his Baghdad shop. "Was he a fighter? Was anybody who was killed inside this mosque a fighter? Where are their weapons? I don't know what to say." Maysoun Hirmiz, 36, a Christian merchant in Baghdad, said she was not satisfied by an announcement by the U.S. military that it had removed the Marine from the battlefield and will investigate whether he acted in self defense.

The shooting in the Fallujah mosque became public Monday with the airing of the footage taken Saturday by pool correspondent Kevin Sites of NBC News. In his report, Sites said the man who was killed didn't appear to be armed or threatening in any way, with no weapons visible in the mosque.

The tape shows a Marine shouting out that one of the wounded is playing "possum."
"He's f--ing faking he's dead!" says the Marine. A second Marine says, "And he's breathing!"
The first Marine then repeats "He's f--ing faking he's dead!" and is shown raising his rifle toward a prisoner lying on the floor of the mosque. News organizations that have shown the video did not show the bullet hitting the man. At that moment, the video is blacked out but the sound of the rifle can be heard. A Marine then says, according to the videotape: "He's dead now."

Sites said three other insurgents wounded Friday in the mosque were also shot again Saturday by the Marines. International legal experts said protection of injured combatants once they are out of action is a basic rule in warfare but that the Marine shown in the video may have acted in self-defense. Westphal said the Geneva Conventions are clear: Protection of wounded combatants once they are out of action is an absolute requirement.
