Alas, my city dwelling leaves much to be desired. I am a plant nut, and I want a window garden for my kitchen, since I have no backyard or patio or deck, etc etc. The window faces an alley, so the sunlight isn't too prominent, either. What would you suggest?

    Functional herbs are a plus!

Lucky bamboo (not actually a bamboo) and ivy not only don't require much sunlight, they do badly under direct sunlight. I don't know of any herbs though.

Careful with the lucky bamboo however. Lots of people burn the leaves and roots with tap water (chlorine) which is just as abusive as setting light to them with a matchstick! Bottled water is not recommended, too sterile. Age the tap water instead.

Both plants require minimal maintenance. :)
