I happened upon a documentary today on the independant film channel, and it was about nuclear war and our perception of its possibilities. Unfortunately, i didn't get to see the whole thing, but i watched the last half hour. They gave run-down of countries and how many nuclear weapons they have.
Guess what- We (the US) top the list at over 10,000 nuclear bombs or weapons of mass destruction. And that is only the beginning. As a world, we have enough nuclear weapons to destroy ourselves 3 times over!!

Now, i am sure that for many people this is not news... but i guess my question, or discussion is this-- WHY?

Why in hell do we need to have so many weapons and such a big artillary? (and please, lets fore-go all the "POWER" commentary...we all know that we [the US] wants to show everyone how big their balls are) But WHY do we allow this as citizens?
I don't want to die...i like life and all...and i am not particularly afraid of nuclear war...but it all seems just too much.

IS THIS WHAT WE HAVE BECOME? a world of tyrants who constantly terrorize eachother?

It started in the cold war. The doctrine of Mutualy Assured Destruction said that the USSR couldn't nuke the US, because the surviving US nukes would be used to destroy the Soviet Union. And vice versa.

This requires that each side have a whole lot of nukes so that the other side can't destroy your stockpile in its first strike.

Thats where the vast number of nukes came from.

The wisdom of Mutualy Assured Destruction (MAD) was debated at the time. But we do have to admit that it worked. Neither the US nor the USSR nuked each other.

Edit: I just read your poll question, who would "help" the UN police nukes?

As far as the UN, the UN is run from the top by the same people running America, which are the central bankers and their globalist minions. The UN was created by Americans, most of whom were members of the Council on Foreign Relations, and most of the money the UN receives is from the US. The UN was created from the beginning to become the world government under the New World Order. They are portrayed as the saviors and the "good guys," when in fact it's all staged. The UN has never been able to keep peace, let alone make peace. Just ask any victim of a UN peacekeeping mission and see what they tell you.

I didn't even watch the documentary you're referring to, but I can tell just from what you mentioned that it's a propaganda piece intended to portray the UN as the "good cops" and America as the "bad cops," when it's all being controlled by the same few people at the top. The "problem" are nukes, and the "solution" is the fun-loving boys of the UN stepping in to save the world. Not only do they present you the "problem," but the "solution" as well. That's how propaganda and mind control works.

actually, the documentary i watched didn't even include any commentary on the UN(it was mostly about Nagasaki and Hiroshima and the terrible things that we have done to people)...that was MY poll question...i just wondered what people's take on that was. I understand the way it works. I was just posing the good old.. why. Why even to this day do we need these things? I know that we have an image to up hold, like we are so powerful because we have all these nukes, but now it has become such an entity and everyone is following suit.

Maybe we should lead the world in destroying things that can destroy us...but people have such trust issues we would probably hang on a few. I bet everyone else would too. But in a way you have to think: We (the US) got this whole thing going, and now we want to police everyone and make sure they can't drop one on us. It's ridiculous.

My thing is how do we get people to realize that on the whole, and especially in this instance, we are killing our spirits?

Why? Cuz nukes are friggin fun. And they make for a great balancer: You got nukes, but we got MORE, so chill. or we'll blow up the planet. have a nice day.

Also, Japan got what they had coming. You bomb us, we wipe you off the face of the earth. It was a great alternative that saved the lives of thousands, and possibly hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers and Marines. The suicidal intent of Japanese culture in that time period pretty much asured that grenades would be passed out to every home, and the citizens would have been encouraged to dive under a tank, truck, or into a field hospital. Based on this, it is quite possible more civillians would have died had we NOT used Fatman and Little Boy.

Humblepatriot, you seem to revel in violence a little bit...its kind of scary.

I hope that you mean those statements to be taken with a grain of salt...
I don't know though, its like we created this "thing." It's like a monster just lurking. We seem to be too treatening as people. Instead of, "We'll have an embargo on your country if you do this," its just "Hey, fuck it, we'll kill ya"

There IS something wrong with that sort of mentality

i dont see why the hell we have enough weaponry to destroy the world a few times over. ever since we made the nuclear bomb to get back at Japan all the other nations were scared of us, so they made bigger, then we made bigger and more, and here we are with enough weapons to destroy all life on earth. FOR WHAT? so we can be better than the other nations, we always have to be together. the world should have no nations, it should be free.

I disagree. Japan should never have been nuked. Japan attacked the US (Pear; Harbour) because the US instigated the cutting off of Japanese oil supplies. Read your history. The US govt has been at the forefront of instigating all kinds of conflicts all over the globe to enrich its business elite.

The documentary doesn't sound very compelling. We had around ten thousand, today it's around six thousand that are active.

And that number is surprising why? What are we going to do? Disarm now that the cold war is over?

We can actually negotiate with other nuclear powers like China and Russia because we have a nuclear arsenal. If we gave up our nuclear weapons, they would not. Who's going to make them?

Don't say the UN, because the UN is not a military force, and not a really significant trade force. The UN can't make anyone do anything.

So in your opinion, we should have allowed the Japanese to continue pillaging China?

The Sino Japanese conflict was at it's high point, claiming a million people a month in China.

The policy of trading with Axis powers and Allies equally would have kept this conflict raging for decades, leaving an apocalyptically high number of people in it's wake. Many many millions more dead Chinese.

I suppose if we weren't involved then it wasn't any of our business?

I suggest you read your history, topolm. The US Marine garrison on Wake Island, with a number of middle-class CIVILIAN contracters was brutally wiped out by a Japanese assault force. Though some Marines and civilians did manage to survive long enough to be captured, a large number of these were executed. The civilians for no other reason then they served no more purpose. And if we did cut of the Japanese oil supply, it was because of their unwarrented aggression in South east asia, as forementioned.

I think Lodui has the right idea here.

Toplom is the one who has the right idea here. Japan WAS provoked, and besides, FDR knew WEEKS in advance of the impending attack on Pearl Harbor, because on November 24th, 1941, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's radio message calling for a "mortal blow" on the US fleet in Hawaii was intercepted by what is commonly known as "Station H" on Oahu.

The whole thing, like all major world events, was staged.

Please inform yourself, "Humble Patriot," and read this:

    http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/McCollum/index.html

It is not Toplom, but YOU, who needs to study their history, instead of everything the text books tell you.

Pearl Harbor was NOT a surprise attack, and, like September 11th, was used as a pretext for war.

What a bunch of happy bullshit. I like how the dates corrospond to the Internet's coming of age, and how the document is dated October 7th. Greece, Romania, and Hungary were all independant countries as of Oct. 7th, dumbass. Greece, Romania, and Hungary. Hungary and Romania joined the Axis in November, and Greece was still holding it's own against the Italian Army. Also, the countries of the British Isles were still free from Nazi Germany. Any half-wit with a typewriter and a scanner could make this. Provoked? No. They were AGRESSIVE. They SLAUGHTERED hundreds of thousands of innocent people. All world events are not staged, you twit, you just live in your own sad little world, twisted to how YOU want to see it.
