i've been playing drums for awhile and i'm pretty good at it. But one thing i can't do is twirl my drumsticks. I just want to know how to do it so i can show off onstage to be seen, cause the drummer isn't usually the main focus for people. Does anyone got tips or know any websites that might help?
i couldnt really find any websites just ask another drummer how to do it. or try looking on google but its pretty simple, im sure you will get it.
just have somebody show you how to do it start out slowly and keep practicing whenever you have time and eventually you will perfect it
Do you really think twirling your stick going to increase your musical abilities? Take the time you use to practice your moves, and practice your grooves. Just my opinion.
One can be showy and a good musician. Don't overdo the showiness, or you'll look like a showoff. But a bit is fine, coupled with good musical ability.
I couldn't really find anything specifically for drum sticks, but i found this thing called pen tricks. I think it's pretty much the same thing, just with a pen. http://www.pentrix.com/videos/videolist.php hope it helps, you should be pointlessly spinning sticks in no time, haha
lol as a drummer it took me about a week to learn the "drum-twirl" which looks as if it's spinning around, but is only spinning half way. hold the drum stick between your index and middle fingers, with the other two fingers wrapped around. open your hand, putting pressure slightly on the stick to twirl anti-clockwise (if your using your right hand). this will spin the stick half way - if you leave your hand open it will stay there. close your hand to bring it back round that other half way, catching it with your middle and other 2 fingers. that's how you do one. to do loads, you have to keep your hand open and slightly move your index and middle fingers in and out to form a pivot which will send the drumstick spinning. it'd be a hell of a lot easier for me to show you, but try, practice, and it feels good when you do it in the middle of a groove in front of a crowd.
That's fine if you do and I'm not saying it's bad music, but that guy was basically saying that if you can pound the shit out of double bass drums, that you've got it made. I think alot of metal drummers are great.
i seeeee. i LOVE pounding metal licks out of my drums but i equally love tech drumming. off-beat rhythms, changing directions and using every available drum and cymbal to create rhythms that seem polyphonic in texture, moving in and out of each other and interwining - have you heard of a drummer for a band called Dream Theater called Mike Portnoy? Tech drumming at it's finest.
Mike Portnoy is a TOP-F'in-NOTCH drummer! *thumbs up* He's like the metal version of Neil Peart. Truly fantasitc drummer, that guy. OK, back to the original question... I've found a couple of video clips that may help the OP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dvzYo4wnks In the above footage, a guy shows you how to spin the drumsticks in two different ways. Try both, though, the first method is generally more common. I myself do this first method, too. And... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NduQdaGp32M Here, a rather pretty girl is doing the drumstick trick in the same first method described by the guy in the first vid. I will also add that I've actually never seen the second method described by the guy ACTUALLY in action(like, during live performances and such). All the drummers whom I've seen perform so far have used the first method. Besides, it is much easier to get into. - Warning: You will experience pain in between the index and middle fingers of your twirling hand after practicing for a long time. Be sure to take breaks in between. -
