Obviously the fact that tampons are bleached is irrelevant considering theysuggest cleaning the sea sponge with hydrogen peroxide, which is... a bleach
It's just funny because we are so afraid to touch blood...but we are touching blood right now...all the time.
Why is it so gross? It is something completely natural, and it is apart of you. It is your blood, and it is not even close to shit. I use cloth diapers on my baby, and cloth pads. I think they are absolutely wonderful, and they are helping the environment. Think about all those pad's that you have used since your period. None of them are biodegradable. Your pads are still sitting in some landfill since your very first period. They arent going anywhere either. Do you think all the non biodegradable trash is just going to magically disappear? Yeah right. It isnt going anywhere and our future children will have to deal with this slobby mess that is building up.
Naturalism is overrated. Seriously, why does everything have to be natural all the time for it to be considered good? Periods are not beautiful; they are painful, annoying, and my worthless uterus can kiss my ass. In fact, the only reason I haven't performed a self-hysterectomy (or however you spell it) is because the pill gave me back my life. The pill isn't natural--do I care? No. You probably don't even have periods that are that bad or you would understand. If I don't have to put up with the pain and inconvience than I won't. About the environment, see my other posts.
Just a historic note. When God "invented" menstruation, there were no nonbiodegradable products. Womyn used leaves or fabric, or spent the time in a tent with clean straw on the floor. The purpose of menstruation is to get rid of the lining of the uterus if a pregnancy hasn't taken place. It was invented in womyn and other animals to prepare the uterus for a baby. Not "invented" just to irritate womyn. Strawberry. I have had SEVERE endometriosis, as well as severe menstrual migraines, and I still honor the beauty of my uterus. I was offered a hystorectomy about 7 years ago, due to some health problems and vehemently refused! Good thing, too, or I wouldn't have my Sage, who was born after the event. I LOVE my female organs. Even if they do cause some pain at times.
tell me, when you have an infection or a cut, are you going to grab the bottle of cleaning bleach from under the sink or the peroxide from the bathroom medicine closet? pads and tampons come full of bleach and rayon and other nasty things, there are several ways suggested for cleaning the sponge, if you don't like the idea of peroxide (that gets rinsed off, not saturated) then you have other suggestions to choose from.
Yeah, as an historic fact, of course women used leaves and fabric...and clean straw, or whatever. But c'mon now. This is the year 2004. I, for one, am very grateful for the invention of pads and tampons. I'm glad I don't have to wear a rag and then wash it every hour or so down in a stream...lol. I have to say, I'm damn happy that we've come this far. Yeah, it must've been a pain in the ass for women back then...but luckily technology has come a long way. Also, you say that menstruation was "invented" to get rid of the endometrium lining, not to irritate women. But that still doesn't excuse the fact that it IS irritating, annoying, and a lot of the time, painful. You seem so hell-bent on defending menstruation, that you seem to forget that no matter what its purposes, it's still something that all women have to deal with...something that's not pleasant, something that's reoccuring, month in, month out. I, for one, don't say to myself every time I get my period..."Oh, good...look how my body is preparing my uterus for a baby that I'll probably never have anyway..."...lol.
I guess everyone looks at it differently. I DO think this when I get my period. I am 42 and starting perimenopause, and despite the fact that I have had a lot of female problems, pain so bad that I had to go to the hospital, at least 7 surgeries on my reproductive organs, I still love my uterus and what it has done and can do. I will miss menstruation when I finally stop. I think there a terrible misunderstanding about how the female body works, and people miss the wonder of it. Men make sperm. It's nice, it's neccesary, most men LOVE their erections, as well as their penises and balls. This is healthy!!!! Yet womyn make PEOPLE, and even if they don't choose to (and this is a VALID CHOICE!) they are still capable. Why do some womyn HATE their capability as well as their organs? I NEVER call menstruation the "Curse." Although painful at times, calling it the Curse is a poor interpretation of it, and taking a more appreciative look at what your body is capable of is healtier. Really. I honor my female organs, from my ovaries to my clit to my uterus. I can't understand having contempt for what makes you female. Everyone IS entitled to their opinion, though.
Hmmm. They put me on the pill when I was 13 because I had severe bleeding and it gave me anemia. I had to bloodclots that would sliver out me that were so painful and huge. I had to take these nasty prenatals just to feel healthy. On my first day of my period even with the pill and now without, a super absorbency tampon would be completely soaked in 20 minutes or less. I am now off the pill, and living good. I have accepted the beauty of my "Red Friend" and I feel that it is something special and sacred. I stopped stressing about it, and it have become less of an ordeal. I take my time to reflect, and relax on my period. Hubby helps with baby, cleans, and makes my week easy. I eat good, and just make it a point to listen to my body. I prevent my severe cramps from staying active and healthy. Belly dance has helped alot. Also Rainbow Moonstone, and red rasberry leaf. I would like to get those spongy things.
cosmic, did you ever get checked for a tilted uteris or womb? my grandma had that and she had really bad bleeding because the blood didn't flow naturally, it would fill up, then over flow like crazy. if you havn't been checked for that, it would be worth looking into.
Yep it is inverted or tilted. I think it is my cervix??? Sorry cant be exact but my gyno tells me once a year.
i highly doubt that pads and tampons have been bleached and could cause cancer. the cotton is white like that anyways....... fuck reusable pads, im sticking with tampons i agree with everyone else who says its annoying and irritating to get their period. i think the first word out of everyones mouth when the first see they got it is FUCK.
Indeed they are bleached, whether or not it causes cancer who really wants bleached cotton inside of them?? I gotta agree with Maggie Sugar on this one... I use sea sponges. I buy the big ones and cut them myself into smaller pieces. I'm fine with washing them out, but I know not everyone would be.
natural cotton is not pure white. I know for a fact that they are bleached, the psycology behind it is that it looks cleaner and women like clean things (especially down there), but they are harmful because the fibers can go into your body and cause problems. if you want to stick with regular pads and tampons thats your chioce, personally i like the idea of helping my body and my world at the cost of alittle effort alot better. it does't matter to me what anyone decides to use, it's your choice, but i think that everyone should have a choice, and to have a choice you need options and information. that's the point of this thread, so that women can be informed of their options instead of being stuck with something that is potentially dangerous just because they didn't know.
its nice that someone has been concerned about this.. but in that site it talks about washing something that you've shoved into your vagina that is full of blood.. and not to discourage you but it's a tad disgusting.
i understand that it's nasty, but logically, women have been doing it for hundreds of years, re-usable pads, cloth diapers, things like that. and with the sponges, you don't have to re use them if you really don't want to. if you throw them out, they won't hurt the environment. i think i may have said this before, but many women use diaphragms, and they are reused, i personally think that's worse then a sponge.
I'de rather use a reuseable pad. Honestly, I don't like sticking things in my vagina unless it's...welll, you know.
