whenever i'm at home i get really motivated about guitar, playing music, learning songs, you know, whatever. and then whenever i get together with my band i try to keep my motivation but when i get together with them i ALWAYS lose it. i don't know why, but it's just like i can't find any spark or chemistry with the band. it might be the atmosphere of the barn we play in, the lack of experience from some of the players, or the lack of enthusiasm the rest of the band has. or maybe it's a combo of all of the above. any advice?
the best plan in that scene is to talk it out with one or more of your bandmates. Let em know how you feel and it will work itself out, one way or another. Keeping it a secret is unfair to your group, and you may find they agree with you. Dont know till you talk with em!
I'd say talk it through with your band. Find somthing that gets all your band hyper of somthing to make it fun. If theres no improvement maybe join or start a new band.
Talk to your band members, if they dont feel or understand what you are talking about, go solo for awhile and/or look for another band.
I'm actually the exact opposite. I get motivated when I'm around other musicians. I am also pretty into it on my own, but nothing compares to playing music with other like-minded musicians.
If you can pinpoint for yourself what's missing with the band and what's there for your solo work then you can learn to bring it into the rehersal room. Are you the driving force of the band or not? If you are then you've got to really choose your band carefully, get members who are skilled, enthusiastic and possibly most importantly you click with. This isn't an absolute rule - our bassist is now one of the most skilled locally and he's sometimes more enthusiastic about the band than myself (I'm the driving force most of the time) but he started out with a "Yeah alright" attitude towords it and no bass playing experience or ability. We got him to join mainly because he had just started playing and he was my best friend. So what he lacked in one area (or 2 as the case may be) he made up for in another. I find the most enjoyable bands to be in are ones where ideas are flowing and bouncing off eachother. Don't go into the rehersal room to work, go in to play. Ok - a few of them have to be work but not, by any means, all. Play covers you enjoy and are good at. Yeah - I think going your seperate ways wouldn't be the worst thing in the world either.
