I think my friend is a racist

I don' think your friend is a racist. I think he is simply sprouting off what has been taught to him through school, people, and television. As a black american (Yes, black. I'm an american), i know that I have to work twice as hard just to get a job. I have to prove myself to almost all but the most demeaning jobs. why? i dont' know. People always ask me to prove that, i look at them with disbelief. Does a woman have to sit back and explain sexism when she turned down simply because she is a woman? Sometimes but not as much as I forced to prove racism. My husbad used to feel the same way that is until he married me. Seeing it daily and having to live it, changed his mind about it.

As for black university and colleges,most were created in the days of segregation, a place for them to learn without the hassle.

As for all white schools, in Delaware, they recently had an article about how the schoosl were becoming separate again because a lot of parents were moving their kids away from the black community. the city schools were becoming all black and the surburban schools, all white. As long as myths are allowed to reign supreme, then we won't move forward as human beings. To me, the problem is easier to ignore that to work on.

Yes we have come far. But we still have a long way to go. For people to say that people on welfare are just lazy is feeding an ignorance. I dont' believe the white man owes me anything. The white man downed a lot of people on his way to the top. But as more opportunities open for us, who knows.

You won't know a black person struggle just like I won't know a white, spanish, jewish, etc struggle.

OUTCAST (caps lock?): I'm not you but let me try to explain why people ask you to prove racism. Techniclly its illegal to refuse someone over race but yeah we all know it happens. I feel the race box should be taken out of an application. However it would be very hard for me to believe that your simply being turned away due to race at EVERY job your turned down for. I'm afraid I'd need an example. What kind of jobs are we talking about here anyway? Just curious, not accusing you of lieing or nothing.

I also dont think black comedians help by saying things like "When black people go on break, we go on break. You got to find our asses." Way to stop stereotypes guys -thumbs up- And we must remember that its not just racial people who have been faced with hardships. Back when New York was being built, signs in windows saying "No Irish need apply." It goes all around. Just keep that in mind. We're only victims of circumstance.

As for institutions of segregation. Its not just old stuff. In my area I've seen 4 black only churches go up in the last 2 months. Theirs a vietnamese church down the road from where my grandparents live too. You think the whites suggested that they get their own churches? Yeah right. Races feel more secure around their own kind... Simple fact. "Minority" groups are overlooked and white groups are predjudece. Its a thing of cicumstance, this being our day and age.

For you to question just proved my point. That was the whole point. I am being ask to prove it. When the two white students who claim they were denied access to University of Michgan I believe because they were white, no one asked them to prove that the was discriminated against.

no matter how people say there not racist or they don't see color, watch people on the streets when they see more than one black person. they grab their kids or their purses and give them dirty looks. With the exception of the Sniper, most of the people that you needed to watch out for were white men.

about comedians. You only mention black comedians. What about the clue collar tour? White people do the exact some thing, but that's allowed. Jeff Foxworthy can talk up and down about "rednecks" and people find it funny. A black comedian talks about living in the ghetto and suddenly it's shameful. Why can't we joke about our hardships in life? They use there God given talents to make money.

Everyone who came here was in some sort of discrimination. I see being called african america racist because I was born in america and I never been to africa. Idont' call white people, European American, or what have you. I dont' call my husband NOrweign American just because his ancestors came from there.

Black churches. Most black churches that I have been to have beenvery welcoming to all races. My father-in-law who is a preacher has talked to me on how a lot of churches that separated back during the slaves time are still that was out of habit. They don't see that times have changed.

I can talk about this for days on end and still not make a difference.The understanding will not be there unless you live it daily. You can say "prove to me that it was racism" when sometimes you can't. I couldnt' do a damn thing when a cop deemed me the most dangerous in a car ful of white kids and slapped the cuffs on me for over an hour when two of the other kids had concealed weapons on them. There wasn't a thing I could do. How can I prove somethign there? Because she didnt' say "******" or any other racial slur (I HATE THAT WORD and peopel who use it thinking it cool, both black and white, need to grow up).The attack on me and my husband for being interracial. I file a police report but I coudl say Hate crime, because the guys defense: "My girlfriend's black".

 

ok, so there's a racial divide as far as the economy goes, what you haven't said is who's perpetuating it. It's certainly not a racial group, it's the people who don't have jobs! You seem to be implying that every black person in America is poor and that every poor person in America is black, complete crap I'm afraid, anyone who is capable of working can go and get a job, if they can't work then they're provided for, I'd say this was a pretty fair situation really. It's only when people start taking the piss out of it and claiming welfare when they are capable of working the the system falls apart. Everyone can do this, it's not divided by race.

So you were on welfare, fair play, you put some in to the system when you were working, you took some out when you weren't and now you're putting some back in again. That's why you have welfare, to help people out when they're on their arses, it doesn't justify people staying on their arses though.

WHAT!!! I might not live in the US but I can't believe that a black man can't get a job, that is a complete load of crap. If there are more black people that whites on welfare then you might want to start looking at educational systems, upbringing etc. in coloured areas (It's a shame we have such things but they do exist)

You're right, there is a situation that's in need of being dealt with but I doubt very much that it's a purely racial issue, the issue that may need addressing is they system upon which the economic divide is based which would seem to be a social divide and not a racial divide.

God! My grandma used to say that all the time and I wanted to smack her upside the head. (never did though)

No offence is meant here, I've just never kept up with the politically correct terms and I'm afraid there are a few racist git in my family so the correct and incorrect terms have passed my by, something that I really hate when having a conversation about racism as I can use offensive terms and not even know it, doesn't come across well!

 

It's alright. I deal with this on the daily, although "colored" has not been used towards me. In fact, saturday became the lastest "N" word calling.

 

That's bloody awfull!! I find it really hard to believe that stuff even happens these days.

 

Trout, you can't help what your friends are and what they do and what they think. Most of my friends are conservative republicans, sad part is, they are all idiots who don't even have any information to back up their beliefs except their uncle told them so. You are lucky because at least you are able to have an intelligent debate with your friends and you two might both learn something, or at least be exposed to a different opinion. I can't even bring up politics around my friends because well not to sound mean, but they are pretty dumb when it comes to that stuff. I bet they don't even know the name of the president. They are more concerned with fixing their hair and make up and who the fuck Jennifer Lopez is marrying this week. Nonetheless, I love my friends for who they are not what political party they affiliate themselves with. Unfortunately I wish they were more educated in politics, it breaks my heart to see people who simply don't know. At least your friend is following politics and cares. If I were you I would cherish your friendship, we don't get too many good ones in this life. Look beyond your differences, if you can and try to be a little more tolerant. It doesn't sound to me that your friend is racist though. Just sounds like what a lot of people believe about affirmative action. We might disagree, but that doesn't make your friend a racist.

Now if he is doing something else that might cause you to think he is a racist, like being rude to anyone who is not the same race he is or making racist remarks or jokes, then I would simply say "what you think that is funny?" I mean if you are laughing along with it, then you only show you agree with the way he thinks.

There was recently a woman here at work who honestly believed that black people should not be allowed to go to the beach. She did not want to be on a beach where there were black people or Mexican people. I have no idea why, she wouldn't elaborate when asked. She said she wanted a portion of the beach sectioned off so that she and other white people could be there.
Now this is going to sound extremely harsh but I believe she got what she deserves because now she is dying of brain cancer. I mean what goes around comes around. If you want to be a bitch to people, life is going to be a bitch to you.

 

On a completely unrelated note... OUTCAST, I just moved to Elkton, MD and quite surprised to see someone on here that is from there as well.
