hey I was just wondering what I could do when I move out for income. I want to buy a mobilehome type of thing or a VW camper or something and travelling around. I was thinking about making necklaces and selling them for my living or something like that. but that was only a thought. my mum also suggested I go fruit picking but there's only certain times of the year that would be possible. If you guys could suggest stuff that would be awesome. Or perhaps let me know what people have done that's been successful and they've survived thanks, peace xx
well, one has to be determined and skilled to survive on the road. There are millions of hippies, tramps, ho bo's, hill-billy, yahoo and local yocal's. The bums on the street are your greatest help. When you get to a town, find a park and look for the hippie's and travel'n folk they will tell you where the shelter's have food and get all your goodies that you'll need like some gas voucher's. Temp agencies Particulary Labor Ready they are a work today get paid today nation wide. Pay sucks but with the right attitude it's a reliable source ( a tough thing when there is noone you know around for 1500 miles. Any trade or skill, or just the simple abilitiy to adapt to things and get things done. When you travel well it's a big and bad ass world out there. Your attitude will dictate your situation. Be smart and quiet. Things always will work out.
I know an old hippy who makes most of his money selling custom hemp necklaces. Another friend of mine does gardening work which is something he loves to do. I plan on doing carpentry and maybe a bit of gardening (My friend is quite willing to teach) You really don't need that much money, considering that you can always camp out. Plus in a lot of towns there is some kind of free food which is always a good thing (Never turn down a chance to sleep, or eat) If you are ever in need of some good advice just ask the nearest hippy, or bum, they always know where to go and what to do. You should find something you like to do and are good at that will be useful wherever you go.
Seems like it's always easy to pick up a waitressing job no matter what town you're in. If you buy a vw be sure you know how to work on them and they do break down a lot. I know I have a 72 vw camper. Maybe a cheap way to go would be camping. Alot of your smaller towns have campgrounds nearby and you could just pitch a tent. That would be pretty cheap. Specially if you take a buddy with you.
thanks guys, you've given me loads of good ideas. Yeah I'm planning to take a part time mechanics course so I'm ready for most of the challenges ahead of me woo! I can't wait to go live my life! Shame I have to finish my Alevels first
hey is this travelleing giong to be a temporary situation or a lifestyle? either way just be willing to apply yourself to any challenge, there is always work out there of some sorts, first of all try the craft root, speak find out what will sell, be original, if this is not sufficient an income then find a route around it part time assistance in cafe's bars etc's cool, there are many people out there willing to take on casual staff just gotta know how to seek em out. perhaps vw aint the way to go, see if you can find something slightly newer reliable maybe even a converstion that you could do yourself so you can make sure it fits your needs, and wont cost to much to keep it going. i really hope it works out for you, travelling around the uk i have much fun and adventures (with a few fellow forumers actually) we used to find national trust car parks to park up and camp in, well out of the way. they are normally in very majestic suroundings, and of course providing you dont abuse them they are free, both finacially and hassle-ly good luck love peace and smiles jcx
Cool that someone posted this, i've been starting to slowly save and plan for the road for next summer/fall, and was wondering the same kind of question. I know with my trade as a cook i can easily get a job, but was also wondering what others did for income.
If you get a diesel you can use the waste cooking oil from restaurants for fuel.(see Mother Earth News magazine for more info)
