    pocket full of shells

all you wanted to see was the smile on my face
as you were looking right into my eyes
talking about things i really didn't want to know about
you told me about bed of roses
but you liked to lay among the thorns, didn't you?
and we were walking along the shore
sitting there and watching the deep blue sea as the stars showed up at night
and we had collected a pocket full of shells
that broke and fell to a thousand pieces
when we fought and turned the pocket upside down
and stepped on the white china shells
but we kept on sitting at the midnight shore
and you were looking right into my eyes
i guess you saw roses in full bloom
before i closed my eyes and showed you all my thorns
we unlocked a chest for all that shells in the pocket
now we have to unlock a casket
and still we are watching the night's dark shore
waves rolling, changing, bearing dreams and fears
i wished i could tell you
but i think you already know
maybe you knew it from the start
when we collected, joyfully, a pocket full of shells
