Have a superb stay. Remember you can pick up a free coffeeshop map in De Kuil coffeeshop, just up from central station. While your there I recommend some Super Silver Haze. That should sort you out for a couple of hours. LOL
Always be polite to any1 who approaches you on the streets. Try and make eye contact and take time to stop and chat with them. Keep your wallet or purse in your back pocket where every1 can see it and if you're english or american make sure you let every1 know cos they love us guys there.
don't worry too much about smoking in the streets just be discreet. I would walk north or southbound along any of the canals in the western canal belt smoking the entire way. Just cross over when you see groups of people ahead, avoid people basically vondelpark should NOT be missed if you have a day with nice weather. feel free to smoke here as well, just find a quiet area with no elderly or children. the tram system is excellent....go to the vvv tourist office located right outside of central station and buy a 3 day pass that gives you unlimited use of trams / buses / metro (subway) for about 13 euro if you take pictures, pictures of the menus and outside shots of the coffeeshop usually rule! i really enjoy the rijk museum.....probably my favorite out of all of em get on the canals!!!! even if only in a cheesy 5 euro 60 person touristy tour boat..... visit haarlemmerstraat.......(pink floyd coffeeshop is on this street) it is full of excellent shops of all types, is very clean / safe, and borders the Jordan which is a great area. eat dinner at a real dutch restaurant in the jordan (west of the prinsengracht canal along the north end of the western canal belt) go shopping at an albert heijn supermarket! buy gouda cheese, fine chocolate (i like the belgian chocolate too), try beer like korenwolf, hoegaarden, etc.
stop thinking, I haven't seen it work out for you yet FYI 1 strippenkart = about 7-8 rides on a tram for 6,60e 1 3 day pass = unlimited rides on tram, unlimited rides on subway, unlimited rides on any bus for three days for 13e one could easily take 3-8 trips on a tram in one day
no its 10 rides just say its 1 zone even if its more who cares you can allso often get free with just showing the strippenkaart and them not paying much attention not to talk about the rushhour... metros are "free" i got to use 1 zone for allmost 2 hours and with 3 diffirent trams once. i dont say that the 24/7 ticket aint bad it doesnt work on night traffic does it? strippencard does and one can allways use the buss the metro and the tram with strippen if needed.
my numbers weren't based on a 1 zone tram ride. if you are taking a 1 zone tram ride you are wasting your money.......
Furball, you've got it backwards, strippen are not accepted on the nightbus. Only hour passes (there's 24, 48, or 72 hour versions), EUR 3 cash, or special nightstrippen that cost EUR 25 for 12 of them are accepted on the night bus. Also All the details are at http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/index.html Also koopa is correct about 7 rides with a EUR 6.60 strippenkaart. It's got 15 tickets and a one zone (the least costly) ride takes 2 tickets.
