Just because alot of people have a lifestyle to go barefoot everywhere doesn't mean they are barefoot 24/7. I just realized that I am one of them because I almost never wear shoes or socks unless Im cold or actually going into a store. If it means anything Im Native American - Cherokee and I run around with my boyfreind in the car and I am barefoot, I just dont go in the store unless I have shoes :sunglasse So...if thats someones lifestyle doesn't mean they always go barefoot everywhere.Actually one time I saw an Indian in a store with my mom who was barefoot and it was illegal for this town, so maybe its genetic or something LOL.

I am very skeptical that it truly was illegal in a town. That is a very popular myth, but is true in a very small handful of places. It is definitely far from being the norm, and that's the way it should be.

There are a zillion archaic laws in the U.S. that aren't enforced. A while back I posted some that are related to bare feet. They are really silly. :)

    I doubt it's illegal ANYWHERE.

I'm curious though- why dont' you go barefoot into a shop if you go barefoot everywhere else? What's the difference?

They ask you to wear shoes if you walk barefoot into a Rayleys in my town.I didn't say its illegal anywhere else just restuarants and some stores here.

Because its imbarissing and I dont want my feet to get stepped on or getting cold, and Im S.A.D and get nervous when people are around or stare... so go figure.
    I bet thats fun :p

I dont see why it would matter if you walked in someplace barefoot, they need to let you worry about your own saftey and not do it for you. People who are gonna get hurt will do so with or without shoes on, people who are prone to get hurt find ways to do it reguardless of what theyre wearing and if the management of a store does not work to the best of their ability to keep dangerous objects off the floor then they deserved to get sued. Besides it might be THEIR store but its YOUR feet, so its really none of their damned business if youre barefoot or not. The stores have more important things to worry about like people comin in with weapons and shoplifters and people that grab little kids, a barefoot person is not gonna cause any harm and if people that shop there dont like a barefoot person then they should simply leave.

    LMAO

Ditto Sax, there's another one too. Freedom and justice for all, my arse*

Anyway, you're right in that barefooting is probably not illegal.

I don't go barefoot all the time. weather, landscape and family seem to conspire against me.

*for true authenticity pronounce ar-s (ar as in car, s as in set)

Blimey are you really 16 with spelling like that? :p

You know what the word illegal means? It means against the law. Just because a restaurant has the right to turn anyone away for whatever reason, it doesn't mean that the law is against being barefoot in that restaurant. It's not as if they'd call the police to have you removed, they would just refuse to serve you until you got bored/hungry and left yourself.

Why should being in a shop or restaurant make any difference as to whether your feet get stepped on or cold? Surely you've got as much chance outdoors as indoors.

I'm not a full time barefooter either - I just go barefoot as often as I can, and when I can't it's a shame - what do you think we are, some sort of "full time barefooters only clique?"

If you like going barefoot go barefoot, and if you don't then don't, but believe you me, it's not illegal, there's nothing wrong with it, and people who try to stop you are fools. Don't be intimidated by people who stare at you. They can't actually do anything to you. I'm sure it's daunting at first - it took me a while to really come out of the closet myself, and when I was your age, I would only go barefoot if I were sure there'd be no chance of me getting "caught". But at the end of the day, it's up to you.

    Except it's not illegal.
Please explain how wearing, say, flip-flops prevents your feet from getting stepped on, or from getting cold.

When I lived in Hawaii, the only rule for our dress code was that you had to wear shoes... which could just be slippers for all they cared, but something had to be on your feet, and in beach towns along coast of cali there are signs saying, no shirt, no shoes, no service... but that's all I've seen as far as rules outside of the school....

oh, and it's actually disrespectful to wear shoes inside someone's house in hawaii too... so most people walk about barefoot. i miss it....

That's not because it's illegal. The stores or restaurants have the right to require shoes, but the law doesn't make them do it, and the health department doesn't make them do it -- even though that's the very reason they claim they have to make you wear shoes.

It's kinda scary, actually: a restaurant owner/operator has to pass tests to show he's familiar with the health code -- and then cites something in it that is not really in it. Makes you wonder if there are things he thinks are not in it, that are.

On Saturday, I went to an Eckerd drug store in hopes of buying a couple of watch batteries for a flashlight I have. I walked in barefoot, which I had done a this same store numerous times before. It was night time, and the place was nearly empty.

I walked past the register, where the woman cashier was leaned over the counter and doing something with another woman who looked like a customer (no store uniform on).

I found that in the battery section, they had only one of the kind I needed left, but I wanted two. I asked this girl at the photo counter if there were any more, say, in the back. She acted like she couldn't care less about helping me, so I figured that her answer of "that's all we have" was bullshit, but she sure as hell wasn't getting off her fat Aretha Franklin-lookin' ass to look on my behalf.

I was kinda pissed off, and I walked out.

As I walked past the two women at the register, the non-employee-looking lady turned as I passed her and said, "In the future, we can't walk here without shoes on..." so I looked at her with a stare, then down at my bare feet, then back up to look her in the eye, and in a sort of sarcastic tone, I said, "I did alright, didn't I??" and before she could respond I was already walking out the door. Maybe what I said made her think about the "logic" of her statement. I mean, her assertion could be taken to mean it's not possible to safely walk barefoot in the store -- but there I was, and I had done just that.

The store does not have any signs that say shoes are required. If I go back there again (and believe me, I'll avoid it) I will go barefoot, and if they give me a hard time I'll tell them they have no cause to try to dictate my choice of footwear (or none). I'm prepared to drop any purchases I've selected and let them have the pleasure of putting them back on the shelves and lose the sale. I can get anything I can buy at Eckerd at lots of other stores.

When I get a printer for my computer, I'm going to draw up letters to send to the HQ of lots of these stores to remind them that barefooting is my choice, and they are outside their authority to try to tell me how to dress and care for my health and safety.

    Blue skies,
    -Jeffrey

I think if more people went barefoot the prospect of losing sales with barefoot customers would be enough to get these people to wake up. But of course these people can prevent that by convincing everyone that going barefoot is wrong, so if you're too shy to do it in the first place, these establishments can make it even more difficult to work up the courage to do it.

I bet there are still plenty of people who'd bar black people from entering their shops if they could get away with it. Barring barefooters is really no different, but in this case, they do get away with it.

It means "laughing my arse off".

And these black people who get barred just put up with it?

I would have thought though as soon as an establishment gets a reputation as racist it will lose business quickly enough that it may have to shut down. Or is it a case of there being a community of racist cunts there happy to continue patronising it.

do you mean you'll be literally opening up your garage, filling it with stuff you want to get rid of and selling it from your own premises?

If you can't be barefoot in your own home without a full interrogation then there is something seriously wrong.
