Do we need such an entity?

 

Well, theoretically we do, but I believe that the police in modern America does a lot more harm than good. On paper it seems like a good thing to have, but it's really become a tool for the government to hyper-regulate people's lives, and is very inefficient, if not worthless, when it comes to actually 'protecting' lives and property. That's the way I see it.

 

Police are neccesary.

I am for the police as long as they do their job.

 

I believe that people have the ability to live in peace without the help of armed police officers. But then you have to think about enforcing the law which is the real reason we have police, to enforce laws.

Yeah ok, I'd like to see you say the same thing when some dude is raping girls on the streets and kidnapping people you love. a lot of times cops are really cocky and think they are better than you, and a lot of them can be really nice people. The problem is that a lot of cops think they are better or something, and we are the "civilians" but that's not just them it's also the training they go through, it's almost like boot camp now. And you definitly have to educate yourself on your rights with police and they need to start following the constitution a lot more throroughly, the US is a police state, but there are good things about them and they need to be around for that reason.

 

When the 12' truck tries to go under the 11' bridge, someone needs to direct traffic.

When the 10 yr. old kid next door is missing, someone should have the equiptment and skills to organize the search.

When two guys are blocking traffic over a parking space, someone needs the authority to tell them to move on.

When the fire dept. is fighting a fire, someone needs to keep the public from "helping"/interfearing.

Yeah, I think that the police are a good idea.

 

yeah you came up with better examples than me, there are just reasons you need them to keep the order i suppose, but when they go too far you gotta call them on it

 

However, police do not prevent crime they only catch criminals.

 

I agree, we do need police but they have too much power and authority, that needs to be stripped down. The police should be partitioned into two categories, criminal and noncriminal. Everything Mike said would be noncriminal. The noncriminal police would be more community focused than criminal police. Having too much power in one place is no good.

 

And We Need to always be able to have guns to protect ourselves...

 

Yea, to protect ourselves from the friggin' government-it causes a lot more problems than the 'criminals' do.

 

DQ, which government. The local governement that puts up stop signs, jails the drunks, and hires the fireworks company for July 4th?

or the not so local governement that spends property taxes, paves highways, regulates contracters, doctors and barbers.

or the fed goverment that declares wars, protects Voting Rights and sends troops if local governments don't let black kids into their schools.

 

Now THAT is the best laugh I've had in a long while!

 

Ask the folks who were on the Selma bridge whether the feds are good or bad for voting rights.
