Even though I'm not exactly an aficionado of these types of music, I absolutely love what I have heard, and lately, have been listening to pretty much any good sixties soul material and funk material that I can get my hands on. The album in my signature photo is starting to become a favorite of mine, and I would love to get some albums from Funkadelic as well. And even though he is of a far different brand of R&B than most artists, Prince has become one of my favorite artists in a matter of just a few months. In addition to that, I have also been listening to a fairly large amount of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye as of recently. I just love the way that this music makes me feel inside, and at the same time, most of it is very cerebral in approach as well as unique. I have yet to find an occasion where any of the above artists haven't elevated my mood or spiritual sense in some way. There have been situations where I've listened to this music and nearly felt the need to cry, which is something that I can't really say about any other kind of music.
I've been listening to all the stuff you've mentioned (and more) for ages now... I don't tend to post about it though, because there's not much interest in these parts it seems... It's some of my favourite music to listen to, though... Like you said, it's got great 'feel' to it... I could go on about all the different artists and bands I like, but at the present time I'm really not in the mood for an explanation, but I thought i'd just register my interest...
Mothership Connection would easily be in my top 10 if not even top 5 albums of all time. BTW have you checked out Funkentelechy by Parliament as that is superb too.
You have to check the blaxploitaion movie soundtracks by Bobby Womack,Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield.Great stuff. It's a pity there hasn't been a good funk/Soul record in a while.
I just thought I'd throw in some more of my favourite artists of the said and/or related genres that don't get mentioned often... Ohio Players Ann Peebles (Early) Commodores Graham Central Station (I love this band! So funkaY!) Mandrill The Meters I also have this pretty rare album by Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul, which I hold in high regard in the funk/soul idiom: I may yet be back to rant about my love of Parliament & Funkadelic and my favourite, funky Stevie Wonder songs
Yeah, I'm not too keen on soul, but I love funk. Some of my favorite stuff is George Clinton/P-funk, Ohio Players, and Kool and the Gang. There's a really cool site about funk called Funk45. They have literally thousands of funk and soul songs off some really rare 45's. Stuff you really can't find anymore. Also, does it drive anyone else completely nuts when they say the RHCP are funk? Man that pisses me off.
Curtis Mayfield is awesome! I bought this compilation of some funk from K-Tel on vinyl for 99 cents a coupla weeks back, called "Super Bad" it's great, man! Superfly is an awesome soundtrack, and you can find some other nifty ones on http://www.moviegrooves.com
Everything that has been listed so far is pretty good. I would add in some vintage Isley Brothers to the mix.
Also, does it drive anyone else completely nuts when they say the RHCP are funk? Man that pisses me off.[/QUOTE] Well, that's extactly what it is (excluding Californication/By the Way).Listen to Freaky Styley (the album was produced by George Clinton) and tell me again that it's no funk. They made some of the funkiest albums ever.Even though it's mixed with HipHop / Rock it remains funk.
Commodores-Machine Gun/James Brown-Payback/Parliament- MothershipConnection*Clones of Dr.Funkenstein/Funkadelic-One nation under a groove*Maggot Brain/P-Funk Allstars/Maceo and the Macks/Horny Horns/Spice/Trouble Funk/Isaac Hayes/Red hot Chili peppers/Roy Hargrove/Meters/Sly and the family stone-Stand!/Gil Scott Heron-Pieces of a man/Curtis Mayfield-Superfly/Keziah Jones -Blufunk is a fact/Maceo Parker/Herbie Hancock-Head Hunters*Thrust Listen to Tower of Power!!!
Exactly, they made "funky" music. They incorperate funk, but it is in no way is funk. The same way they incorperate metal and rap into their songs, but they're not consider rap or metal. I don't think them playing "funky" music justifies them as a funk band. The same way Head Hunters was a funky album. That one album was funky. Does that make herbie the difinitive artist in the genre? Hell no. People should be ashamed if they think all there is to funk is rhcp, I'm damn sure they're out there too. That's like saying if I put a synth in one of my songs, I would be making techno music. It's the same thing.
