Vandalising of Jewish graves

For those of you who aren't New Zealanders and won't know about this, several nights ago a person (or more likely persons) vandalised I think it was 3 Jewish cemetaries to the extent that over 50 graves were broken, crushed or vandalised in some form, a prayer house was burnt down and swastika's were imprinted in the grass. This could possibly be due to the fact that 2 Israeli spies have been in a fair bit of trouble here recently and some moron has decided that somehow decided that justifies doing something as terrible as this or it could just be typical retatarded racist behavior. I don't know, but when I heard about this I was just so embarssed to be a New Zealander. This country is such a crock of shit - its not clean and green, it's not laid back and friendly and it sure as fucking hell isnt embracing it's cultural diversity.
Thats what pisses me off the most, the goverment harping on about how awesome and friendly this place is to citizens and strangers alike when really its so fucking racist I probably know less than about 20 people who aren't prejudiced in some way or another to a particlalar ethnic group or country.
Does anyone know if the families of the people that were buried in the graveyeards are going to get compensated in some way in order to rebuild head stones and what not?

Yes, but New Zealander is extra retarded coz its always going on about how proud it is of its diversity in peoples and cultures when really there is this MASSIVE racist undercurrent simmering away all the time. There are so many stupid, ignorent people that live here.

with race relations between maori brimming, race relations between imigrants it is getting crazy

politicians are playing it heaps too, its a bit sad......

however the jewish graves are somewhat against religion is it?? or is it soley based on race.

Many people are racist. It's a sad, sad thing but there's really nothing you can do. Ignorance is common, everywhere.

Vandalism is always inexcusable, but especially when it's done on the basis that a particular group of people don't hold the same beliefs as the vandals. Anti-semitism stretches back thousands of years, but surely we've learnt enough by now to know that racism and dogmatism are just plain wrong.

Still, New Zealand has much less of this sort of thing going on. In some countries this thing would be common and usual, rather than a national outrage.

 

just to clarify, there were two seperate occasions that this happened. One was 12 graves in a central wellington cemetary and the swastikas were carved into the ground there. This happened the night after the two israeli dudes were sentenced and Helen Clarke gave out her statement on israel.

the second incident happened a couple of days ago in Makara cemetary just outside of wellington. The orthadox jewish graveyard there (there's a liberal one too) was vandalised, up to 90 graves were pushed over and the Tahara House (prayer room, service place, body preperation place type of thing) was burnt down. Several of my friends have had their grandparents or their great-grandparents graves pushed over.

It could be defined as racism. Judaism and Jews have often been described as a race AND a religion. It is both. Before Moses got the torah on Mt Sinai, after the exodus from Egypt, jews were known as a nation called the Hebrews. Judaism as a religion was defined on Mt Sinai. This double meaning has carried on up until the present day - Hitler defined judaism as a race AND a religion (though primarily a race first - anyone with one jewish grandparent (hence jewish blood) was a jew and was exterminated).

Basically, in my opinion, anyone who is going to go out and desecrate something belonging to another race, religion, ethinicity, whatever you want, as an expression of hate is not worth having around. Waste of skin.

I dunno what sort of wankers do shit like that....as someone already mentioned there is alot of anti-semitism in western europe, not really in Ireland, but on mainland Europe there is.......pity people couldn't grow up a bit. I think alot of it stems from (and this is a major generalisation) the fact that Israel is one of the most racist states on the planet, the fact that they don't want Jews or Christians there.........only want Jews only state. Also the way they treat the Palestinians doesn't help there case. It's just a shame that Jews all over the world get tarred with the same brush.

 

I was so heartend to see the WHOLE of parliament stand up to it though, and condemn the sickos that did it. Every single party gave a speech that said that we do not and will not tolerate that sort of thing in NZ.

And it was also good that the WCC paid for putting makara back together, now, if only theyll pay for Bolton street

 

Yeah its so awesome how EVERYONE is shocked and disgusted at what has happened. Theres no divison with opinions like there was/is with the foreshore and seabed issue, EVERYONE knows this was dreadfull, and the people who did and were probably expecting some people to agreee with them are so completly and whole- heartedly BUMMED.

 

Im not so much a political person and not up to date on whats going on in the country but from what ive read here I have to agree with gloria, im ashamed to live in this country now. Seriously what has this world coming to? it's unbeleivable that you can pretty much accuse all of this on greed and selfishness. I maybe wrong but in my view it's whats driving everyone to be what they are like. And racism don't get me started on that, this country is crap for it, and saying that i'm been racist been an americian and all. it's truly sad to see.

Saying that there is nothing you can do about racism is what helps keep it going. If noone tries to stop injustice, things never change. You can't change every person's mind, but you can try to help those around you see that racism is wrong. Giving up only makes it worse.

I don't think it's about giving up - The pathtic racism of a select group of idiots is not going to make me ashamed of my country though. Am I ashamed that such people live here? yes. But am I proud to live in a place where everybody else who lives here has condemed them, thereby trying "to help those around [them] see that racism is wrong"?. Yes, that too.

(oh and tamsyn, side note - the piece on the news with all of parliament pissing on the wankers who did it showed some wellington jewish leaders who went to hear what parlaiment had to say - I'm sure I saw (sorry about the spelling) Gousdie?)

 

i agree, there will always be a small portion of society that will do revolting things..but atleast this was outright rejected by the majority of people in NZ...i doubt that would have happened 100 years...and thats a lot of progress, atleast IMO.

 

You're right, EvaDestruction. There are things that you can do to stop the spread of hatred and racism. And people who would destroy graves in such a cruel, thoughtless way need help, because they're obviously sick, twisted people.

 

I do not really disagree with anything you have just typed. In fact, I agree with it.
HOWEVER there are other factors in this equation that you either don't know about or just haven't written about.

first of all, there are muslims and christians living in Israel. Out of the population of 6 million people here, 5 million are jewish.
Also, yes, it is a jewish state. And there are very good reasons for having a jewish state. If you really want, I can go into all the reasons for it as well as listing the arab states where jews are not welcome to live and where anyone who is not muslim has second class citizen status.

On the Palestinian side of things. Yes, they have shit treatment, yes they should have their own state... but the PA (Palestinian Authority - the thing that Yasser Arafat is the head of) is the "government" as such. It is supposed to be helping the people in the Occupied Territories (West Bank and Gaza) and it gets billions of dollars every year from various sources around the world (INLCUDING A BILLION FROM ISRAEL - a country which is currently in one of the worst economic slumps it has ever had) and yet hardly any of that money and aid gets passed down to the people that really need it by their own leaders. Arafat's wife is currently living in one of the richest neighbourhoods of Paris and gets hundreds of thousands of dollars in an allowance per MONTH.
So its not only Israel's fault that the palestinians are fucked. their own leaders and people aren't even trying to help them - the only thing that is currently going on is the extremist dickheads who try and get into israel DAILY and blow up civilians. Every day when I read the newspaper, on page 2 is another article with a headline along the lines of "IDF Stops 2 More Attempted Bombers".

Shit is happening here on both sides.
