Hello out there. If anyone in North Korea can read this, the government of that country put a scare in me yesterday 7/4/06. The news channels showed the outer most range of a 3-stage rocket and I live on the west coast in San Diego county and looks like it might hit that area (if the N koreans were to get it right). The reason for this thread is to express myself in a simple way and to see if anyone out there would or could appreciate the possibility of something coming to our shores. Would there be enough time to get safe or should I start building a bomb shelter?

I really wouldn't worry about anything happening.

We have ways of destroying it before it came close to the U.S.

you must live in an area where you wouldn't be affected. I live close enough to a nuclear reactor (a handy target for the idiots of the planet) and there is not enough information out there to keep us safe. the duck under a desk routine i was taught in elementary school would never keep us safe in these times.

dear miss peace, i don't believe that a missile could be shot down before it got to the west coast.

I used to live in california. I go to school in Boston, I am two hours away from NYC.

If something was going to happen, it would happen to my part of the world, not CA.
Don't patronize/assume. You don't know the full situation. If North Korea was planning on launching their rockets, you wouldn't have this pre-warning. They are just rattling their sabers.

You have more of a chance of getting hit by lightning/dying in an earthquake than a terrorist attack.

at least the earthquake will be fun. i have survived all the earthquakes that occurred here since 1956. and nothing has, except those missile tests have made me more scared. with missile attacks there will be a warning, not enough mind you but something will be sounded via the tv or air raid siren.

North Korea isn't going to start any type of war. In fact all they did was give the global community a wake up call and I would assume either China or Japan will react pretty harshly.

Yea, exactly, Shambala Peace-and North Korea would never shoot a missle at one of our allies or at us anyway, because they know we would flatten them. Their saber rattling is to get our attention-they want something, negotiation with the Western world, entrance into the world economy, whatever it is-the nuclear thing is just a baragining chip to get our attention, which they're cetainly doing.

I don't think they have enough powerful allies that would be willing to get into a war over this. China is our greatest trading partner, and that would be too sweet a thing to lose for them.

North Korea is just beating it's chest. However it's government is isolated and militant. North Korea isn't crazy but they are militant, and if we isolate them too much they could lash out. South Korea would be the clear loser there.

North Korea is already isolated too much. I'd suggest we low play this military development in official policy for a while and continue the talks while secretly comming up with an acceptable proposal of aid and energy development to offer North Korea.

North Korea has huge internal displacment problems and hunger, and any way we give aid to the North Koreans will be played off to their people as a victory, however if we low play it while we come up with an acceptable solution, this would allow the leadership to know we're very serious and can't be intimidated. I suggest about a month timeline to come up with a reasonable proposal to allow the leadership to know we're not rushing to concede to them, and at the same time be reasonably quick to provide them with the aid they need.

Whoa. That's not a very peaceful attitude. Just because they are a fly in the ointment doesn't mean they deserve to die.

Nuclear weapons will never be completely destroyed, because every country will be paranoid that some other country will hide some nukes, then hold the world to ransom. Infact, if everyone agreed to get rid of their nukes, i'm sure a good 50% of nuked up countries would keep a few back, just in case something like that happens.

Then again, i could be completely wrong. Everyone worked together and disposed of the small pox, except america, which has some stored in a fridge somewhere, but have never used it irresponsibly.
