Just went to the fruit stand and got some local strawberries, local tomatoes, plums, nectarines, peaches..... So very yummy. I hate fruit that is typically sold at the grocery store.
when I first moved to AZ, there was a fruit stand just up the street my our house that had the BEST peaches I had ever eaten. They also had plums & cherries but I don't eat those.
I bought a box of tangerines or nectarines or whatever they're called (those little oranges. We always called them nectarines, but my boyfriend makes fun of me for that ) the other day and have been inhailing them. Apples, grapes, oranges, pears. I like frozen berries better though -- they're all smooshy and good.
The problem with most store bought fruit is simple. Its the same shit you see at most road side stands but it was harvested too early so it would not spoil on its way nor crush. Life of a store fruit: It gets picked, trucked from the fields the same day to coolers. It is cooled there for several hours and loaded onto OTR trucks with reefers. Then driven across country to a grocery warehouse. It is loaded into the warehouse, then loaded onto local trucks that take it to the stores and from there loaded into your shelves. From say Reedley CA to Indy IN a solo driver if he had all his hours when he left Reedley CA he would drive 11 hours and stop around Kingman AZ for 10 hours (21hrs) he would leave Kingman and make OK City for his next 10 hours (42hrs) he then would leave and make Effingham IL for next break (63hrs) then arrive in Indy IN (70hrs) from the time he left CA and that is if he drives hard, very hard. So yur produce is now 4 days old before it hits the warhouse and been bounced along some pretty shitty highways.
I love buying fresh produce from local farm stands. I swear it's always way better than the grocery store. Plus it's usually cheaper.
yea, in copley (part of downtown boston) they have farm stands....mmmm fresh fruits and veggies. love going there and picking something up and munching on it other day had some raspberries
I´ve been picking strawberries 2 weeks ago (or so), that was fun. The last time I did this was when I was a little child
My oldest son (he's 6) just had his first strawberry picking experience a couple of weeks ago as well and he absolutely loved it! Plus he was so proud of that fact that the berries he picked were used to make a fresh strawberry pie. He told anyone who would listen to him out in public how he had picked strawberries and his mommy made a pie with them! I love strawberry picking too.
I have been dying for strawberry rhubarb (spelling) pie. Used to have it as a child and cant find a sole who makes it.
