Denis my hamster died today. She(I finally figured out it was a girl) had been languishing for some days now but she would never let me near her to check her out. But then when I found her dead, I was able to inspect her.

She had developed an absess on her upper lip area and apparently, couldn't gnaw on stuff..then her lower teeth grew too long and caused her to have eating problems. The poor thing probably died from both infection and malnutrician.

After me and my daughters gave her a tearful last pet, I wrapped her up in papertowells and put her in a freezebag and put her into my freezer. Tommorrow we will bury her in the woods behind our home.

Denis was 7 months old and she will be missed. RIP Denis Leary.

Awww, thats so sad. At least she's (glad you know it's a girl now) in a good place. Hamster Heaven. They can do the hamster dance all day long now. But seriously, my thoughts are with you, and I will burn a white candle in her honor tonight.
    Blessed Be.

Oh, I'm so sorry. It is so sad when a pet dies. Anything from a dog to a goldfish sends my kids and I into tears. I'm sorry your little ones and you had to go through that. A good funeral is healing to the souls of all, I have found. (Boy, when and if this property is ever dug up, they are gonna think we had some kind of cult here, with all the dead pets and things our Malamutes have killed. Skeleton City.)

Our hamster, Cappacino, seemed....... not well the other day. It was really HOT in our library, (Moon got a computer for her graduation, and now we have TWO CPUs in a small room, which is shared by a fish and books and Cap, as we call him) Sage comes running in to the kitchen and tell me, "Mama, I think Cap is OK, but he's lying on his back, with his legs in the air!" I flew in there, and he did not look good.

Moon took him out, and fed him some water with a syringe, and I thought we were going to lose him. But, after the water, she let him wander around and he perked up. I turned off the computers, and made sure the AC vent was open and we have been checking on him, making sure he is drinking.

Because they are rodents, they often have problems with overgrown teeth. I have found that the best thing to do is to get an other one, pretty soon. Let the kids know, this one isn't a replacement, but they will feel better with a new pet. And hamsters are SO cute. Get him good chewing toys, so he can wear his teeth down. The ones we have had (yeah, we're on the third, and also had a mouse, who only lived about a year and a half and died on Christmas Eve. :( ) like to chew on the metal bars of the cage, but we also gave them wooden and composite chewing toys.

You can tell the boys from the girls, the boys have HUGE ball, kind of hanging down behind them. like a huge butt. It's actually kind of amusing. Only get ONE hamster at a time. If you get the same sex, they will figjht (they are solitary in the wild, the few wild that there are) and if they are the same sex, you will have bagillions of baby hamsters.......which you DO NOT want.

RIP, Denis. You were well loved. Let the kids do the Benediction. They and you will feel better.

I am still dreading the day that our beloved Mr. Pigg crosses the rainbow bridge. He is 6+ years old, and doing fine so far... but with that 5-8 year average lifespan we're starting to worry and plan how we will help the kids when it does happen.

I am thinking that since we love to scrapbook together, a tiny memorial album would be a good way to help. I'm saving pictures of him to use for this. And my mom has offered to let us give him a burial in her backyard since he loves to visit them and nibble their clover while we're away on vacation.
    love,
    mom

    Aww that's so sad :(

*hugs to you and your family*

I had a hamster when I was a kid, she lived to almost three. Got really attached as hamsters are wonderful, they really live in the moment.
