    HELP!

Basically i'm 20. I didnt start getting any acne till about a year ago and its obnoxious. If i try the teen acne stuff (clean and clear, noxema, clarasil etc) it overdries my skin and i get even greasier then usual. Same with witch hazel, i used to use that in high school.

Anyone have any suggestions to zap my zits? Homemade is great, store bought is fine too. I just need something to rid me of zits, get rid of the grease and NOT dry out my skin. Does that exist?

    Thanks!

Well, I use Proactiv. That's the one with the infomercials with all the celebrities. I had the same problem with my skin drying out, but this stuff literally gave me perfect skin. No zits, no grease, no drying out. The only catch is that it's $40 for a set that lasts about 3 months. If you're willing to pay that much, I'd say give it a try.

    Good luck :).

Before bed use a really gentle cleanser (I use Cetaphil but you can probably find something natural.) Follow with a thin layer of jojoba or camellia oil all over your face. What I do next is follow that with a thin layer of one part 5% benzoyl peroxide with one part 100% aloe vera gel--I mix it together and apply it everywhere except near my eyes. If you want to go the natural route, you could probably replace the benzoyl peroxide with a drop of tea tree oil; tea tree oil works for some people, but for others, including myself, benzoyl peroxide is much more effective for acne. In the morning I follow all the above steps except for applying the benzoyl peroxide/aloe mixture (instead I just apply my sunscreen & a bit of makeup) and my skin and acne has been doing very well. I've had acne for 4 years & this is probably the most effective regime I've come across (and I've tried many, including Proactiv).
    A couple other things:
*Remember to drink lots of water. It helps to hydrate your skin from the inside out so your body isn't trying to overcompensate for dryness by over-producing oils.
*Don't over-exfoliate. You can't scrub the acne away. I was an avid scrubber for the longest time. My skin would feel so smooth I was sure it was helping my acne, but since I've switched to my way gentler routine, my skin has improved so drastically that I rarely use face scrubs or masks anymore.
*Cold aloe vera masks are a godsend. Keep your bottle of aloe vera gel in the fridge. Apply a nice thick layer all over your face (staying away from the eyes & lips) & let it sit for at least 10 minutes before rinsing off. It's ultra-healing & soothing, and is especially good for reducing redness.
*And lastly, remember that everything works differently for different people. It can be frustrating, but with patience and a little trial & error, you'll find just the regimen that best benefits your skin.

I had terrible acne when I was a teenager into adulthood and the only thing that could stop it was Accutane. Barring that, the above advice is good, although now for my daughter (and occasionally when I break out), I make an essential oil blend that kills the bacteria that cause those blackheads and cysts to manifest themselves. The recipe is clove bud, eucalyptus, lemon, tea tree, hyssop, oregano and cinnamon in a base of olive and neem oils. Those oils are in order according to concentration... I usually use about 20 drops of clove, eucalyptus, lemon, and tea tree, and about 10 of the rest, in about a teaspoon of olive and neem mixed. Neem is very important in this mix. Oregano oil kills HIV in a petri dish... too bad we can't just inject it into humans to kill AIDS. After cleansing your skin (never use soap, it destroys the protective acid mantle), apply a few drops of this blend all over, and in between washings its fine to apply it to a particular breakout area or cyst. It's not greasy, it soaks right in... essential oils are volatile and the fatty acids in the olive oil are extremely nutritious.

This works for me and my daughter and stops a cyst's progress immediately. Hope it works for you.

simple and cheap to give a try: aspirin scrub. I just dampen the pills, but I know of women who add aloe gel.
I dampen the tab, let it break down a bit (not watery) and use as a scrub. Leave on 10 min (hey, you wanted to soak in the tub with a book, right? Here's your chance) and rinse. after 2-3 applications all blackheads will be banished. treat whiteheads with tea tree.

i jsut recently bough something called black soap form etsy, a woman on there suggested it for my allergy to most soaps and shampoos and its really good, makes your skin really soft and it has a natural anticepetic in it.it is traditionally a western african recipe ( if youd call it that )

    acne=skin diabetes

it's an inflammation that means that the skin isnt able to process glucose properly. take a look at dr. perricone's book about acne, it deals with the root cause of acne on a metabolic level, it doesnt just try to mask the symptoms

    ~health to you, sister~

I wouldn't worry about them. Truly, most people really don't care if you have acne or not. Once I realized that, I was a lot more comfortable with myself.

its not so much a self concious thing (though it IS part of it) its mostly that it can get painful having a big zit on my cheeck causing pain each time i smile.

But either way, it would be nice to wake up and not have a polka dotted face. hehe. i wish it didnt bother me, but i guess i cant help it.

nimh- im intrigued by your comment!!!
