Kozmigroov Nu-Jazz whatever we should call it, its the shit. The first of it that I was ever exposed to was The Bobby Hughes Experience/Combonation (different lineups I think). And I read somewhere that their LPs run for like 80 bucks even though they came out in 2000. (all second hand half assumed info there) anyways http://www.freeform.org/music/kozmigroov-index.html Its like the music of the future I wish it were more mainstream though so it would be easier to find.
Check out Roy Ayers' older albums. It is acid jazz, but way oldschool and much more soulful imo. No loops or any of that stuff, just chilled out grooves and vibraphones.
How bout Medeski Martin and Wood, or Jimmy Smith's Root Down to an extent, Soulive, Greyboy Allstars, Galactic are sort of acid jazz, though I think it's more jazz funk. MMW is the most lysergified jazz band I know. Everyone else is funky jazzy and less trippy. I don't listen to stuff that relies solely on loops. And Roy Ayers is pretty funky.
OMG... whenever someone mentions acid jazz, these are the guys I think of. Karl Denson is SUCH a mofo player. We opened up for them at the Belly Up in Carlsbad once... wow..
^^ there are two types of acid jazz I think, Jazz thats acid and acid thats jazz I know that doest make too much literal sense, but I think you cen get what im saying.
greyboy is bad ass. Robert Walter in any group can lay down some funky rhythms. But i wouldnt call them acid jazz at all. Their funky soul jazz kinda stuff. Nor is Medeski Martin and Wood acid jazz either. They are experimental, funky, jazz, psychadelic stuff. When i think of acid jazz, i think of electronic/techno jazz. Pnuma, The New Deal, Brothers Past, Lotus, STS9 and all those kinda sounding bands. Pnuma being my favorite of the group. But Ozric Tentacles is another band that comes to mind when thinking of acid jazz. they are more electronic and less instrumental jam sounding than the others but their all good. (including MMW and Greyboy) But if your REALLY looking for something thats new, and waaaaayyy out there. Check the band, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (hence my username). They are straight from outer space dude. Nobody plays anything NEAR similar to them. They have this bassist (Reed Mathis) that doesnt even really play bass lines. He improvises with weird effects pedals to really create a unique squealing/ trippy sound. And ofcourse, Jason Smart on drums is a jazz drumming genius and their Rhodes and keys player, Brian Haas is....hes.....hes...well hes basically a Keanu Reeves of piano. (gonna save the whole world lol) Check out the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey....thats basically what i am gettin at
And yes your right, I sure hope atleast that this will be the music of the future (next 10-20 years. were still a WAYYYYS away from any significant improvments in the popular music scene). But even today, there are a number of really really talented musicians. They are just a little harder to find.
MMW is psychedelic jazz but not acid jazz? Which psychedelic? At MMW the other night this kid came up to me and started blabbing about power rangers and running his hands all over his face. It was great.
Soulive, Medeski Martin and Wood, John Scofield (some of his stuff at least).... those are my favorite acid jazz artists.
Soulive is cool, they were my favorite band at one point cause of kraz and neal but I doubt I'll ever go to another one of their shows. The crowd is not my style.
