My understanding was such.

You said everyone who wanted to join the military was dumb due to the horrible things your grandfather had to do.

And Ruski said that attrocities during war were common.

Well I'm sorry you found out about that, but she's right. Attorcities during world war 2 were very common. We tortured Japanese. The Japanese tortured the US soldiers, and China got fucked up by Japan.

20 Million Chinese died. Horrible rapes and murders happened in China from the Japanese occupation.

There was never any glory in war. The US entry was nessecary to protect itself and to liberate Europe and Asia, but we commited inumerable attrocities.

Some of those attrocities were commited by young people, who were brash and angry abour what they had seen and took it out on innocent people.

War is a horrific last resort, and the only time It's justified is to protect civilians.

I'm sorry you had to find this stuff out about your grandfather, but Ruski said nothing insulting about him, and you jumped on her.

 

Many fucked up things happened in WWII, and i guarantee your grandfather wasn't the only one involved. Mine was a POW and in the Baton Death March... very very sad. He was paralyzed his whole life and died an early death because of the torture he went through.

You aren't alone in the situation. no need for personal attacks.

 

The point Jerry was trying to make was....yeah...war fucking sucks....but it becomes personal when a family member is made to commit these atrocities...and his grandfather regretted and can hardly live with himself over what he did....just like mine (who was in the german army) regrets and was ashamed to be german during that time....

He was saying perhaps think twice about joining the army or whatnot before you are forced to do something absolutely horrendous like torturing someone...and Ruski jumped on his ass trying to make him seem stupid...of course he would get upset about it....who wouldn't??

 

I understand that, but there are better ways of dealing with the situation than name-calling and saying you are going to stalk someone's posts.
Since it's obviously a touchy and important topic, one should still be able to get one's point across while still being civil. After all, this IS the internet. people provoke others. It was wrong of ruski to jump on him, but it probably was not meant as a personal attack.

 

Well Ruski was being a little condescending towards Jerrys immediate realization of the horrors of war which haunt his grandfather so deeply.

But Jerry was drunk and/or emotional at the time and not explaining himself well. Ruski was just saying how apparent the horrific nature of war was to her (perhaps shes had this home hitting realization also) and wasn't aware of how much it hurt Jerry at this time because he didn't express it well.

I'm not defending Ruski's being condescending, but I doubt she realized that jerry was so deeply hurt and concerned for his grandfather at the time, and I don't think that justifies two days of personal insults.
