Well Im feeling the presure of the media. I just got through watching Oprah basically telling women what to wear shoes, bathing suits, dresses, bras to improve your figure. And well I kind of felt like someone smacked me in the face, hurt my feelings. I dunno really how to explain it but they got me thinking about my weight.

They lifted up this 49 year old lady shirt and she had a flat stomach a beautiful body at 49...wich is amazing. But it kind of made me feel like oh my gosh my stomach isn't like that. I mean Im thin...but when I sit down for a while i get lines in my mid section and i have lost some weight being a vegan and it has improved but these lines are still there. I feel fat...and I know I shouldn't but I can't help it. I know its nothing that a little sit ups won't fix...but argh i just feel crappy.

    Dang media....

i know how you feel...just when I'm starting to feel better, i'll be switching through channles on tv and tada, i see yet another weightloss show, etc...
I just think about the good things about the way I look, even if it's hard.

You just have to learn to ignore it.

It's kind of like having a little brother or sister...you have to learn to ignore them or they'll drive you nuts.

This is why my television is always off. Stinks, it really stinks, just forget it. Be you.

Yeah listen to what DancerAnnie said and just ignore it. If we all listened to what the media want us to look like we would all look like Barbie dolls and have no brain and where’s the fun or originality in that.?? In my opinion everyone is beautiful in their own way and I know that sounds very cliché to say that but its true. We are all floating around on a giant mound of clay or something in space and we have no idea how we ended up here. It’s a miracle that we are even alive !! so don’t be sad because of some losers you will never meet who have closed minds. It’s all so irrelevant when you look at the bigger picture. Just be grateful that you are unique and not another Barbie. :)

read a good book, or try to do something with a friend or family member instead of letting yourself think about things like that. Work on a cross-word puzzle with whoever is near you, and force yourself to turn the boob-tube off.

Decide to go for a walk - and only come back home when you're happy again.

I watched about one minute of that exact episode the other day, and had to turn the channel. It aggravates me too much. I just got over an eating disorder, and I have to say it's NOT WORTH IT. It's so hard to ignore something you're bombarded with in magazines, books, TV, movies, everything, but unfortunately I have to agree with everyone else and say when you see something like that, don't let yourself be drawn in to their bullshit. Change the channel, go outside, find something else that makes you feel *good*, instead of letting it affect you too much. Remember- we can't control what other people say and do, only how we react to it :)

    sunburst is really right.
I personally found that after not watching as much TV lately and just doing more things that I personally enjoyed made a world of difference in the way I looked at myself. I even started to eat healthier and thought that I was losing some weight. I bought a new bikini and was sporting it around the beach like it was no one's bussiness, which I have never done before, especial since I'm a size 12-16 (always different at different stores, so I dunno). But then when I turned on the TV accidentally to this show called x-weighted, and the lady weighed the same as I do, I got really upset when I saw just how heavy she appeared. Funny enough, earlier that day, I had been watching the "skinny" and the "full figured" girls go by at the beach, and I thought that the ones with a little more meat were more attractive than the ones who looked "perfect." Then I catch myself "looking down" at this other lady on tv (who I personally thought looked a little better when she was about half way through her weightloss, a little chunkier and softer), and I was completely ashamed of what was going through my head.
I also bought a cosmo magazine for the first time in 2 years the other day due to lack of reading material and I can barely even bring myself to read it. The first day that I did, I felt the same old shitty way about myself again, constantly comparing myself to others and telling myself I was by far not good enough....now I just threw it in the trash.
All I tell myself now is, "this is the way that you were meant to be. You take care of yourself and live a healthy life, and you are the way you are for a reason. You would have been someone else if you weren't meant to be the way you are." It's a little cheesy, but you know, it works if you teach yourself to believe it..........and get rid of the damn tv and magazines!!!!!!! :D
My best suggestion would be to ditch that crap and find other things to occupy your time....hiking maybe...something to do with nature that reminds you of natural beauty....? some sort of craft? writing? anything that gets your mind working and not focousing on the ridiculous standards people are expected to live up to and change themselves for.

No it's not Just because a lady is 49 doesn't mean she has to look bad. I've seen ladies in their 80's and 90's with great bodies, now that's something. I mean no harm but Oprah has a self-esteem issue and following of people that have an even bigger self- esteem issue. People in America think that men look good at any age but ladies are unattractive after 30. Take Sharon Stone for example, 14 years ago she was sexy but now the people don't think so because they know she's not in her 20's and 30's anymore. Sean Connery was the sexiest man alive at age 60.

Yes, Oprah is full of mess and has been for years. I especially loved it when she wasn't a spokes person for fat people. (Her words) Why is she a spokes person for how a lady should dress, feel, and how good they look when she can't always maintain that degree of self-improvement. TV Land is has Gunsmoke. (By the way, ladies aren't older than men after 18 or else the statistics are wrong.)

erhhhm I saw that oprah. I don't know I have my low self-esteem moments but I think I'm pretty hot even though I don't fit our societal ideals and I know 'it's not okay to think that' but screw that I'm pretty and a good person and I don't need anyone or the media to make me feel otherwise-I won't allow it in my life.

All of these women have given some great advice, beggining with ignoring it, turning the TV off, all the way to doing other things and keeping busy.

Also, a healthy normal woman should not have very low levels of bodyfat, and to prevent skin crikling when sitting, you'd have to be too lean. It affects women's hormones.

I know this may all sound strange from a guy, but some of us prefer natural women hands down. Reality, is a far cry from the beliefs that society sells us.

I wish that I could explain things more clearly. I'd like to ecourage you.

Oprah is a self-absorbed bitch. She has such intense body issues that she feels the need to project them onto her audience in order to make her self-esteem skyrocket.

that is a good decision, not to watch oprah anymore.
i made the decision to not watch TV at all, and i feel so much better since then.
i mean, the only shows i really watch are futurama and stuff like that. it's harmless. :p

and all those skinny women on TV aren't even hot anyway.

That is such a wonderful way to live.

Yeah, those fake women turn me off anyway. Materialism, pride, and arrogance are sickening. Unfortunately, it promotes the fake look in society.

exactly, i love when people understand -and even better- agree! :D
everyone on TV is so fake, even reality TV. it's ridiculous. i can't believe people think that's the way we're actually supposed to live.
