were chores as kids divided by gender roles?

when i was young i bbqed while my sister cooked.

    she vacuumed/did dishes/cleaned bathrooms/misc housework

i chopped wood, mowed the lawn, shoveled snow, changed oil, etc.

i was just curious how normal this was

my brothers and i didnt grow up together.

but my sisters did their laundry and the dishes two nights a week each and cleaned the bathroom.
i just had to do dishes on fridays and my laundry (but i was also a lot younger than them).
i mowed once. haha. and i would clean my room when i wanted (about every other week).. my parents figured its my space in the house, so i could keep it as i wanted.

my cousins (a boy and a girl) had is completely equal. some weeks she would be doing the "boy" chores and he would do the "girl" chores.

..i always wanted an older brother:(

but yeah, me n my sister did mostly girl chores.. vacuuming, dishes, cleaning bathrooms, folding laundry, etc. [but my sister would mow the lawn from time to time, especially after my dad left] but it was funny, cuz i got all the easy chores.. and for some reason i REALLY hated doing them. thats one thing i was a brat about.. doing my chores haha:rolleyes:

we never did to many chores...but when we did, it was usually stuff like, raking leaves, cleaning our rooms, picking up dishes...maybe vacuum the stairs. thats bout it...i think my mom likes to do everything herself and prefers us not to do chores :p

my dad wanted me to start mowing the lawn on a regular basis, but that never happened :D if we had a lawn mower you can driver around in, then i might be a little dissapointed

it was more based along age. Like when my oldest sister was in jr high, she was expected to cook more because she took manditory Home Ec. Same with my brother, and me. My younger sister is pretty usless..

We all had to shovel snow and thigns. One summer a couple years ago, i had to mow the lwan lots because no one else was home most of the time

I was in charge of giving the gardener his instructions

Hahahaha....in all seriousness my mom was explaining to me the hierarchy of servants and who can give who orders in Zimbabwe.....for example women NEVER speak to the gardener, and the cook is head servant.....

.....servants are the norm at home....stupid everywhere else....

hmm i dont know if i ever had chores until we moved to wisconsin/dad retired from the army.

never really have to do anything but keep the house clean when the government does the rest for you :p

but now my sister and i tend to randomly trade off chores. except when it comes to taking care of the huskies. they's mine. :H
