I see it as both. It's a good passtime, but it's also quality, which is an art. I've got sweaters that my grandmother knit me in highschool, which outlasted any store-bought sweater I've ever had, and they're so pretty that everyone's given me compliments on it.
Good point. Yesterday I finished knitting a skirt for my niece and today I will probably start on that sweater my father has been bugging me for the last months for.
I think it's both an art as well as a way to pass the time. I personally don't know how to knit, but I'd like to learn sometime.
Am I the only one who laughs at Bird's posts as opposed to seeing them as a serious question which evokes a serious answer? I can't be the only one, right?
Did anyone used to knit coasters daily? I was amazing... sometimes I'd use multi-coloured wool, often I would loosely sew on a happy face. It's amazing how beautiful things appear as a child. Oh and I also once made a "Ginger Spice" coaster when she left the band... tragic.
I am amazed that Bird knits, but I'm not laughing. I knit, too...actually I'm not really sure what's funny about making fabric from one long fiber....
I'll bet anything that Bird doesn't knit, has never knit, and has no intention on ever knitting in his life.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. I'm just saying that when he starts a thread like "For me, knitting is..." it probably means he doesn't knit. I think knitting, or any other hobby that keeps the mind occupied is a great thing.
Well, whether or not Bird knits... nonetheless... I think it's great that guys are pretty open about doing stuff like that... things that are stereotypically 'womens things' like knitting... My husband wanted me to teach him a year ago how to make some very basic things and he ended up making me a hat and scarf as a Thanksgiving present which not only I thought was incredibly sweet, but everyone was surpised at how well done it was, especially since it was his first real knitting project and the fact that some guy knit it... so it was kind of cool.
I'm trying to teach myself how to knit. I'd love to learn. I think that crafts that you can actually make something useful are fantastic. Like knitting or crocheting or sewing. Things like cross stitch, which makes lovely art, really isn't a productive pasttime. Ironically, I learned how to cross stitch ages ago, but have yet to learn how to knit, crochet or sew.
I agree... I love crafting, but find myself more into crafts where I get something productive or useful out of it.... good times.
I made a huge canvas print of a local castle for my second wife just as a happy weekend present once and her exact words were "OMG a fucking craft project", before storming off to Foleys.
