More than half of the tuna consumed by American families comes from non-U.S. producers. But some of these producers -- particularly in Ecuador and Mexico -- use practices that can hurt or kill dolphins and catch tuna with increased mercury levels. In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, large, mature yellowfin tuna often swim with pods of dolphins -- a relationship that's exploited by some commercial fishers using purse-seine nets that ensnare tuna and dolphins alike. Since the late 1950s, approximately seven million dolphins have died from this practice. The practice poses an obvious risk to dolphins, but the large tuna that swim with dolphins often contain the highest levels of mercury. So this practice not only harms dolphins, it also poses a risk to people who are unlucky enough to eat tuna caught in such a manner. Send a message to the Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration to improve mercury testing so we can keep tuna safe for our families and for dolphins. saying that only tuna from ecuador and mexico have higher mercury levels is false....the larger tuna are the adult so there levels will be higher....the younger juvinile tuna have lower levels but catching them before the can reproduce is what is endangering the species........ sounds like a marketing ploy to impose regualtions on those two countries to improve there harvesting practices to save dolphins .....they should not try to con people just to get more signatures....
people!! the simple fact of the matter is as long as we live ín a way that promotes the use and\or production of chemiicals that end up in our natural living systems we will continew to poisen ourselves..... whether or not they are trying to con people is irrelevent...
okay then send me $100 dollars .....i am making a "keep our oceans clean fund"...uh huh..yep i am...sorta ...it will be for a good enviromental cause tho.... and it might be a good cause but if they have to trick people to get more signatures then they are not helping anyone .....educating the public and leting them make there own choice is the best way.... and its says to improve mercury testing ...not limit the contaminated fish or mercury emissions...will they post these test on the tuna package to imfo the public?...not likely...the word mercury is just there to grab the publics attention.... and what about all the other countries that have tuna fishing fleets?...why only those two? ......because i bet they use nets that catch dolphins .... if they want to get a petition to get those to countries to change there fishing ways that limits harm to dolphins ...then they just need to say it ...i would sign it...
