Why do people refer to Puff Daddy and Snoop Dog as "hip-hop"? this irritates the crap outta me. THERE IS A DISTINCTION between gangsta rap and hip-hop. Its hard to describe. I can't freakin stand gansgta rap. That's like the popular stuff, like 50 cent, Snoop, Puff Daddy. REAL HIP-HOP is like Cypressw Hill, Bone Thugs n Harmony, A Tribe Called Quest, The Bestie Boys (even though they suck), Tupac, and FUnkmasta FLex makes hip-hop mixes (with a lot of scratching) of popular gansta rap songs. People should know the difference. Especially old people, and the Wal-Mart music department!!
The only hip-hop or rap I spend my money on is Tupac and Three Six Mafia(the underground shit). All the rest I burn from other people's CD's or get off the internet, because it's not worth my money.
Pac was cool. I've never heard Three SIx Mafia. Is it rap or hiphop? (I assume you know the differance).
It's art, so it's hip-hop. That's where I see the difference in the two. You can tell they are making music because it's what they like to do, which is why I have enough respect for them to actually pay for their music as opposed to just downloading it. Most of Three Six Mafia's older, underground shit is the best. It has a psychedelic quality to it, they even sample some Pink Floyd songs. A lot of their older music was kinda satanic, at times. They had a group of about 12-15 artists on their independant label, with most of them participating in every song, and they all have different styles. On each of their cd's they have a "Posse Song", which always features every single artist on their label.
*sniffle* I like Snoop. He's so laid back and weird and I like his voice and rhythms. And he's fucking smart, too. I'd love to spend an afternoon with him... I'm not a fan of "gangsta" rap or whatever, because gangs piss me the fuck off. Sad that in a lot of inner cities, you join a gang or end up getting targeted by one.
I HAVE NEVER JOINED A GANG IN MY LIFE!!!! Oh wait... Yea, I'm not a big rap fan, but Pac was pretty ill, and I actually liked Bone Thugs, haven't heard em in a while though.
To be pretty honest, I wouldn't consider any of the bands you mentioned hip hop. I'd consider them good rap. Though I haven't heard any underground 3-6 or much cypress hill. Hip hop to me is Saul Williams, Roots, K-os, A Tribe Called Quest, sometimes.
well there you go. Besides, rap and hip hop and gangsta whatever isn't really music anyway. It's just recycled redundant blase stuff to pretend that it's music.
I've been into rap/hip-hop/whatever since the early 80's, and from what I can tell, it's an ever changing definition. There was a time when hip-hop and rap meant exactly the same thing. These days, I commonly hear the term hip-hop used in reference to pop music and R&B. It's a matter of semantics, and we could argue it to death without coming to anything resembling an agreement. There's no doubt that a lot of old school rap is definitely hip-hop. Performers like Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, Latifah, and Sugar Hill (just to name a few) defined the term really. Even back then, though, there was not a clear consensus. Run-DMC and Beastie Boys were referred to as "Rock" just as often as they were called rap and hip-hop. As far as I can tell, the real divergence between rap and hip-hop took place in the late 80's with the rise of gangster rap and the west coast rap game in general. The majority of the New York stuff was still considered hip-hop and the west coast stuff wasn't. In the last 15 years though, the terms have largely lost meaning.
Wal-Mart censors all of their cds...so most rap albums mainly consist of the following words: "The", "A", "Me", and "You".
All I listen too much anymore is Hip Hop, and Downtempo stuff. Most peoples understanding of hip hop is a bit painfully shallow. It's their loss.
yeah. Run Dmc- "The Kings of ROck"-cool. But ALL New York urban music ISN"T HIPHOP- Jay-Z, 50 Cent- nOT HIP-HOP. DMX-more gangsta, though he has a more intelligent way of flowing than da stupid bitch "50 Cent", and DXM uses a litlle scrathcning in his music. Turntable scratching is one of the most definative elemnts of true hip-hop music. And Pac was from Cali, and he was hip-hop, and Bone is from CLeveland, ohio (originally), and they are definately hip=hop. For anyone that hasn't heard Bone, check out the songs: "Fo the Love of money", "SMokin Catfood", and "Murder One". Another cool one is called "Change The WOrld". Its sorta a tune where a bunch of crack-slangin ghetto boys embrace, but than critiszize the original hippie concept. They go from saying "First we lost Biggie, than we lost Pac.. when's the shit gonna stop", saying that people can make a better world (through Bone's own thug retoric), to saying "He'll kill him, she'll kill you, let the babies all die, aint nuthin we can do". Its a MUST listen to song for true hippies who also like hip-hop. P.S. - ATCQ is tight as fuck.
