    i have a question I'm curious about:

whats more important/entertaining: an artist's song or the actual presentation/performance/image of the band?

I don't think that's something we can tell you but more something you have to work out for yourself.

I think good songwriting is vital but good presentation is important too.

You can have a fantastic song, performed really badly and it completely ruins it. Then again you can have a band that are fantastic performers, all their records are fantastically well produced, etc etc etc, but they have nothing to say.

If you had to make me choose between song-writing and presentation, song writing would have to take dominance.

You need to find a balance between the two, the nature of which depends on the type of music.

i agree with the balance, however i also think that how the band sounds is more important than how they look

If you ever watch MTV, you'll find lots of famous people where the opposite is also true.

I think it may depend on what the nature of what you are trying to do is.

The most important thing is progression, and self-awareness, IMO.

The most important thing is to do it for yourself. If they like it, alright then... if not, you're not a miserable failure and you should find someone who does like it. The Allmans were told by a producer that they wouldn't see a larger venue than a bar...

I don't know about the whole DIY thing. I don't disagree with it, don't get me wrong, I've even started up a small indie label for the DIY release of my bands album, however, as shit as this fact may or may not be; the best way to get anywhere is to get a major label signing.

I'm not anti-coporate when it comes to music. If a big ass deal came my way right now I probably wouldn't take it because we're at a stage in our career where it's more important to develop then start trying to get sucessful.

That said when the time is right, if a deal comes our way from one of the big four, we're taking it!

The DIY thing is all well and good but even at a very small level it's a lot of hard work. I would prefer to focus on writing good songs, jamming with the band, playing good shows and recording good CDs than doing the whole thing of phoning round promotors, pestering them, spending hours burning and printing CDs, packaging CDs, constantly phoning round people for various reasons, managing finances etc etc etc.

If EMI was doing all of that for me, I would not be complaining; as long as I have the freedom to play music that I love!

    Much Love

Appearance means shit. Just look at grunge music in general. Or punk rock. It's all about the music to me.

well in this fucked up modern music seen, to get really famous, image is alot obviosuly, but hopefully tahts not what one is doing it for

in my opinion these two things are quite seperate. i mean theres some bands i love so much but have no real desire to see them in concert, and others i may really want to see live, it all depends on many things. i think i big part of it is the personality of the members/solo artist, if that makes any sense. jsut reading The Dirt by Motley Crue made me crave to see them live (which i did :D) just because of all the shit they pull
