Hey all my father was born in Pico and I try to go every year, climbed pico (7800 feet) last year, it was cold on top. I didnt take any pictures, but heres me with some fresh fish I had just caught, I believe the expression on my face is due to being tired (from the long walk home). I normally dont stare blankly into space. Anywho, lets hear about the azores! For those that havent been heres some landscape about 3000-4000 feet up the volcano, thats me and the son of the cows owner making sure they have water.
My paternal grandparents were from Santa Maria Island. Grandpa Antone arrived at Ellis Island at age 14. Grandma was still at home in diapers. ( family arraigned marriage) At 14 she was put on a boat for America. They lived their whole lives together and raised 8 children. Our family name is De Souza or Souza in North America.. .................Dennis Antone De Souza ... aka ....Alaskan......
AfricaUnite, I also live in Canada, and was born to immigrant parents who came from the Acores. My father was born on Sao Miguel, but was raised in Angola, and eventually moved to Terceira, where my mother was born. That's where they met. Vive os Acorianos! I'm a proud descendant. Much love to you all!
Nice which Island? Unlearn- A lot of the older guys on my island faught in Angola The reason my father came to Canada when he was 9 was because his older brother was about to be drafted to fight in Angola. They didnt want to go to america either ebcause of Vietnam. Have you been to the Islands much?
My grandparents came to America when they were young. I would love to visit the islands. Also a proud descent.
The only island I've been to is Terceira, that's where I have the majority of my mom's side of the family. The last time I went there was at about age 13, so it's been a while. Most recently, I went to Porto (March 2007) but I want to explore more of Portugal - mainland and the rest of the Acores as well. Gotta make some money first. It's a beautiful place. As I said, my dad was raised in Angola as a child and went back to Portugal to help out on his family's farm. He went back to Angola, though. Conscription. He fought in two wars and was in the army for years. Angola holds a special place in his heart, I will make it out there some day, and feel it as much as I can. Have you only been out to Pico? And what area of Canada are you in? There's LOTS of Portuguese immigrants in Toronto, which is where I'm from, as well as in B.C. Hope all is well, brother. -Unlearn
Ive been to Pico, Sao Miguel, Terceira and Fial. A relative of mine works on the military base in Terceira, he took us on a tour 2 years ago. For a military base it was pretty laid back. I live in St.Catharines now for school. I can see Toronto on clear days. Im saving up to go aswell. Seems like you do quite a bit of traveling, at this point I only have a desire to travel to Pico. If you ever make it to Pico, climb the volcano, its a trip.
We're all related My Dad is from Terceira but lived in Angola for 8 years before moving to California. My mothers side is from Pico and that is the DeSousa side. I've been to Terceira, Pico, and Faial. I'd like to climb to the top of Pico this year because I am going again in August. Any suggestions? It seems pretty high to me but I am healthy... I love it there, the weather the people and the parties (I go to Terceira alot) I'll be there in 2007!
