Hey....I have itchy feet again. I only recently moved back to Florida after living in England, and now I want to move to Portland next summer.....Just wanted to see if I could connect with anyone who could give me suggestions or is a local. I knew one person in Portland, but he's not in the picture anymore.

Yup, born and raised...that's a rarety around here. :) I live in Southeat Portland, walking distance to Mt. Tabor park and Hawthorn...close to bus lines with good access to downtown. You can always find some groovy folks hanging out on Hawthorne or down town in Pioneer square. Nice place to live, as long as you make it out of the city frequently. Which is easy enough todo. :)

Thanks! It's good to meet you! What's the cost of living like there? (apartments, etc...) Do you need a car to get around, or can you rely on public transport? I would love to put my car on the back burner for a while and get back to public transport and using my feet like I did when I lived in England. I hate my dependency on my car to get from point a to point b, but where I am in florida, there isn't an option.

    :)

My wife and I are planning to move to Portland in 35 months(and counting). Can't wait to get out of Florida. Funny, I use to live in England too.

Decent housing in the city is generally unaffordable, but the public transport is OK. The reverse is true in the suburbs, where housing is cheaper but public transport sucks.

LOL...yeah, ditto on Public transportation...but it can get you where you need to get to in the suburbs, if you are patient. :) In the city, though...it rocks!

I lived in Portland for a while cost of living is high, but people are always looking for roommates or to rent a room check out www.willametteweek.com it should help you with any questions. Goodluck in your quest. ;)

P.S. Transportation system is great between the bus, metro & cable cars you can get just about anywhere in the metro area.

I'm attempting to live and work in Portland myself. Just moved from Florida, originally though I'm from Cincinnati. I do not like Florida. It's too hot, too flat, too boring, not enough variety. I chose Seattle as my destination but it's really expensive there. I've found that it's not much cheaper in Portland but with enough determination I know I will find a place. I still need a job though. Currently I'm living in Reno, NV with a friend until everything falls into place. I spent about four days there before I drove down to Nevada. Ironically it was hot and not rainy at all. A friend told me the weather I was experiencing was not usual. I do like Southeast most of all. Not because I'm lesbian, but because it seems like everything I will need is right there. I think the transportation in Portland is the best I've ever known. Even Cincinnati doesn't have a light rail system. I like that the buses run later than 10pm (like they do in Florida). Any suggestions I'm all open. And when I get more experience I'll stop by and help out if I can.

You might try "Dotty's" listed under Oregon Restraurant Assoc. it's a keno & video poker house. They have places all over the Metro area. You'll need a bartenders licence & food handlers card. Used to be they gave you somewhere between 28-45 days after you got hired on to get it. You have to attend a class and put out a little money. Tips can be real good.
