just finished watching the movie and im a bit confused. up untill the very last 10 seconds i thought Jack was just going mad becasue they said the hotel was built on indian buriel grounds and the spirits were fucking with the family trying to get him to kill the kid and his wife. then he froze to death and went to join the spirits. but at the end it shows him as a waiter in a 1921 picture of a party. how is that possible? wasnt he from the 70s? could someone please explain also what the fuck was up with the weird ghost dressed up as a dog?
I believe both of those were inserted into the movie and are not in the book. I know the end picture isnt. As i've read, its to show that he could never leave, he belongs there, you know? Its hard to explain at 1 am. but like the spirits that are there, they belong there. he's one of them, thats why he was drawn to the place for work. get it? its not part of the book though, so i wouldnt overanalysis it.. wasn't part of the original meaning and all that.
I've been wanting to watch this ever since I began working as a night porter in a hotel.I remember seeing it as a kid,and now it feels like I'm in the film. All the night porters before me have gone slightly mad and been fired.I got my final warning last week! It does send you mad though - all the time when I'm on the lower ground floor setting up chairs and tables at 3.30am I hear thumps and creaks like someone is walking around up there - so I rush up to check it out and nothing. The guy before me was hoovering and saw something out the corner of his eye and caught sight of a girl dancing by the pool outside - he went out with a torch but nothing.Big hotels are just weird at night, specially if your working alone
There was a new version of the movie that was split into 3 parts, where instead of the Maze , there were bushes shaped into animals that moved, and this version was closer to the book, and from what I got out of it, Jack was always the caretaker, that he came back into each life just to look after the hotel. HE was GRADY in one of his before life's. As for the dog, either it was supposed to represent a demon ,or it was a costume party that dissolved into an orgy!

Well my thinking is that Jack had "Shining" himself. Shining is the ability to see future events or to see into the past. He was always the caretaker at the overlook hotel. This explains the whole thing. The movie itself was a vision of the future from when Jack was younger and working at the overlook, which then fortells the future from which the movie was based on, Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick are amazing. One of my favorites.
That part flipping terrified me! I still don't get it, and it's confusing and creepy and just so damn weird I'm all like ""
