    Doctors suspect chemical weapons

    Beirut
    July 28, 2006

LEBANON is investigating reports from doctors that Israel has used weapons in its bombardment of southern Lebanon that have caused wounds they have never seen before.

"We are sending off samples tomorrow, but we have no confirmation yet that illegal weapons have been used," Health Minister Mohammed Khalife said. The Israeli army said it had used only conventional weapons and ammunition.

The Lebanese killed by Israeli air raids are charred in a way local doctors, who have lived through years of civil war and Israeli occupation, say they have not seen before.

Bachir Cham, a Belgian-Lebanese doctor at the Southern Medical Centre in Sidon, received eight bodies after an Israeli air raid that he said exhibited such wounds. He has taken samples from the bodies to test for what killed them. He believes it is a chemical.

Dr Cham said the bodies of some victims were "black as shoes, so they are definitely using chemical weapons. They are all black but their hair and skin is intact so they are not really burnt … If you burnt someone with petrol, their hair would burn and their skin would burn down to the bone. The Israelis are 100 per cent using chemical weapons."

Lebanese President Emile Lahoud has repeatedly accused Israel of using phosphorous bombs in its offensive.

Human Rights Watch, which has accused Israel of using cluster bombs in populated areas of southern Lebanon, said it had not verified claims that Israel had used phosphorus. "We are seeing abnormal burns, different from wars we've seen in the past," it said.

These (potentialy lying) doctors have seen actual people bombed in Lebanon. What have you seen that makes you so certain that the reports of chemical weapons are false?

This is a media war. They will say anything to win it.

(and sadly, the Hizbollah will win it)

We know that Muslim doctors report that they have seen injuries caused by chemical weapons. Whether they actualy have seen such injuries, or they mis-diagnosed the cause of those injuries is in doubt.

If they are deliberatly lying in order to stop the bombing of Lebanon, I think it is an admirable lie.

Oh yeah mike, its a lie because they're "Muslim" doctors or else why include such a blatantly racist particularisation?

Interesting how Kurdish doctors (also Muslim) were never doubted when claiming the folks at Halabja were "gassed" by Saddam. No possible agenda there of course not (despite the fact that the Kurds were traitors to their own country and sided with Iranian forces in the Iran-Iraq war).

It never ceases to amaze me how ingrained the duplicity of principle is back home, what with the entirely misinformative, sanitised, decontextualised, rabid pro-Israeli media and press being the daily bread of self absorbed, intellectually complacent majority.

Time to wake up and smell the scale of the war crimes and crimes against humanity by both Washington and Israel. It only takes a simple one minute read of the Nuremberg Principles and an ounce of rational and principled consistency to understand.

White Phosphorus is much less effectitive for most purposes then conventional munitions

It's easy to sequester either way, so it shouldn't take long to find out.

Perhaps, but it sure causes a much more painful and agonizing death.

Don't rely on the media to report it.

I'd assume it's more painful. I don't support bombings or chemical weapons, but I'm not going to believe chemical weapons were used on Lebanese based on this. Especially considering the health minister denies that it's evident so far.

Although if it is found to be true it's horrific. If not, there needs to be a cease fire anyway.

WP has several legitimate uses on a battlefield, and this would not be one of them.
