Hey everyone. Ive been a vegetarian for just under three years now and I can't get anywhere near cooking red meat or I get sick to my stomach. I dont have the problem with white meat or fish. I havent actually vomited yet, but it's so bad i come very close. I actually have a gag reflex (the "urk" thing.) It is getting in the way of celebrations with family because they are all meat eaters and they insist on having steakhouse dinners as a group. Now my sister is being cruel to me because i cant attend her party for fear i might retch. Does anyone else have this problem? And why are meat eaters so offended by our polite choice not to eat meat? I dont rub their noses in it or make animal rights statements unless im asked... I'm feeling hurt by all this, but im not going to change my diet because of what they think.

i work at mcdonalds, and they MADE me work in the grill section today, and i was feeling so sick to my stomache, i really did think i was going to hurl!
i mentioned not wanting to work in the grill because of being veg, but they laughed at me. they made me finishe, the person who puts the meat on the bun and wraps it up.

People always judge what they don't understand. Meat eaters judge veggies because they don't understand.

I was a veggie for years and years, and dealt with a lot of anger from my cattle-ranching relatives. Now that I am older and can look beyond myself, I can understand that they felt I was judging them just as much as I felt they were judging me. They thought that I hated them for what they did, and I felt they hated me for not eating their livelyhood.

Do you think it might be a lack of understanding coupled with everyone's insecurities that is causing this problem for you?

Yeah, often times I have to touch raw meat at the store when I'm scanning groceries. It makes me want to gag. Especially when the blood is dripping out and gets on my hand. Not only is it unsanitary it's just plain obnoxious.

I cook bacon for my boyfriend... I have to lather my hands in soap 3 times before I touch my veggie food... but I do it cuz I love him :)

Being in love with a meat mouth it would suck for something like diet to get inbetween us. If I cared so much we wouldn't be able to eat together!! And I love cooking for him :)

P.s. while I must admit I tend to get more freaked out by meat that looks like an animal.. like hen or turkey. Other than that I that I have no problems being around it:) tho it would rock if my sweetie went veggie!!!

ARgh same i have only been vegan for a month but I was a vegitarian before that. And everytime someone cooks meat at my house I almost vomit. And when I say oh thats horrible what is that? Their always liek don't try to force your belifs on us. Im not I just asked what the heck you cooked! I don't know why people get so mad, I guess because we choose to be different from them where sort of ...I dunno.....outcatsed. But its just like anything else that doesn't fit the norm. But don;t worry your doing good keep it up and just ignore people who can't respect what your doing.

well when you act like what they're eating is gross like right in there face it is kinda disrespectful to them, especially if they're in the process of eating it!!!

and yes it is gross. but still...

I was at a cook out and this woman took a big ol' chunk of my tofurkey italian sausages right on her plate and as soon as I told her what it was she shoveled it right out in front of me into the trash saying her kids wouldn't like that. I asked her how she knew, not giving them the opportunity to try it, and she said with her nose in the air that she wouldn't dare give her kids something like "THAT!". fuckin bitch.

but i guess my point is i would hate to make anyone feel the way i did just then, even a meat mouth. in other words hold back the ewwww's and gross until your in private :) They'll respect YOU more for it.

Well, thanks for all the input. I have to say I am the most passive, fair, even-handed person i know. I do NOT share my oppinions of their diets with them, as I hate it when they do that to me. I simply say "Sorry, guys. I cant go to the burger party because I get sick. It's not a choice, It's out of my control." I never say anything like "that's gross" or "Gnarly" or anything else insulting. I even cook chicken for them when i make bbq food for the parties at our house ( i can tolerate white meat for some reason). As far as a lack of understanding goes, my parents and my sister were vegetarians for a year when i was a child. They have no right to be judgemental with my diet. They know why I did it (my health) and they are never pressured by me to change their lifestyles. I do the grocery shopping for the entire household and I make sure they get plenty of carnage for their every meal (how can people eat red meat EVERY time they eat? wow...) So, when they are harsh about my inability to smell the stuff, I get the impression they think I'm making it up. Like I'm pretending to barf up to the top of my neck just to insult them. Yeah, that's logic for you.

Is it the smell alone?? or maybe it's the images that come to mind when you smell it. If you use to eat meat I would assume it's a psychological problem. In which case you can if you choose (tho maybe not overnight ;) ) to overcome it.

If I lived in a vegetarian society for a year and then I sat and had dinner around some meatmouths I would probably get sick to my stomach!! But being as I have just about every meal with meatmouths I really don't have a problem (unless it's a BBQ joint and then the smell can be just OVERWHELMING... for me)... sure I get caught starring at their meat sometimes but ya know thats not really a big deal.

We all know here that the animals they're consuming were tortured and killed for them, we all know how disgusting a practice it is, but you can't torture yourself with always thinking about it. You'd go crazy. I guess what I'm getting at is, just don't think about it. Accept it and know your doing what you can to help them.

Maybe get used to the smell of alittle meat (have them cut back for a few days, explain to them why) so you can get used to eating with them again... and then gradually let them increase their portions

Could you drop by with dessert after everyone has eaten or after the meat has been cooked? Or tactfully go outside (or inside, whereever the meat is not being cooked) for a short while?
