Today I went to Fantastic sams which is a barber shop and the lady said you can get a hair cut but you need shoes to go back because hair can get into your skin. I said I dont care I can brush it off and she said No it can get inside your skin. Uh wow thats the weirdest thing I ever heard. When I get a hair cut I get some hair in my shirt thats picky but I dont think it ever went back into my skin.
I would have told that barber lady that she was getting under my skin The jokers at my grade school said it was unhygenic for my hair to be below my collar. Even though they don't always make sense, we must stick up for 'store owner rights'! And let's not forget the court ruling to keep barefooters out of libraries, because there might be blood, spit, aids, herpes, or anthrax on the carpet.
I live in Texas - the state health code specifies (its on the state website) you must be shod when getting a haircut. The lady that cuts my hair (i occaisionally get my haircut barefoot) told me that the tiny cuttings can get stuck under your skin and cause infection. She said its happened to her on a number of occaisions.
I would be more concerned with the cleanliness of the cutting tools used for haircuts and especially for manicures and pedicures. Short hair clippings that remain on the neck could get rubbed into the skin by a collar and possibly cause an infection. The skin on the neck is thinner and more tender than soles. Soles are thick and usually tough for barefooters. I would imagine the chances of getting an infection from stepping on clippings is small, although it's always possible.
In a somewhat related issue, I've heard of a few people who have gone barefoot around the office and had problems with skin irritation. Some cleaning crews sprinkle a cleaning powder on the carpets. It works well for cleaning the carpet, but certain types of cleaning powders can cause a skin rash.
Why is it any of their business if you get an infection anyways? You couldnt turn around and sue them for it because they would just say its your fault anyways for not having shoes on so really they have nothing to worry about. Besides their expertise is hair cutting so I think they should just stick to their area of expertise. This isnt defending store owners rights because this is just downright silly and infringes on the customer's rights and comfort more than the stores. Thats why I think these places need some sort of regulation as far as who and when they can deny service to people because its just absurd some of these things store owners can get away with.
