I'm trying to dread my sweeties hair but he's soo fussy over it, it makes me wanna give up and tell him to let someone else do it, but really I want to put my love into them and at least be part of the process.

    Here's where we're having trouble.

    1) His hair is REALLY thick AND curly. I've dreaded my thin hair 3 times and never had any trouble but I find it very hard to get a good dread going in his (and it is long, shoulder length). I do the twist and rip technique. I finally got to where I'm literally pullin my damnest on it to make it as tight as it can be (his hair still won't break which totally makes me jealous!!). So I end up doing it, taking it out and doing it again so it will dread easier the second time.

Well I guess the real problem here is this other girl did one and it came out rockstar beautiful. tight at the end and all the way down. so he wants my pathetic (totally not but admittedly not as cool as hers) dreads to get tight at the root. So I'm thinking of either trying to backcomb the root alittle or just tie little bands so hopefully it will stick closer together, or if nothing else just take it out and let him worry about it. What would you all do?

    2) I thought and have advise him to not wash them at all for a few days to maybe make it easier to dread or let it start out all natural and then mess with it. He doesn't want to use a bar of soap (my top recommendation), or buy dreadie shampoo so I thought if maybe he goes til we can't stand it anymore (it's getting greasy, 4 days now) wash it and then spray it with sea salt, water and lemon juice, we can get it easier to work with. Is this a good plan? the best plan?

To be honest I think he just needs to relax and not worry about them so much but he has the right to be paticular and now is the perfect time to figure out how you want them done because it gets harder to go back the more you wait. I shouldn't be sensative about it at all but I can't help but get alittle annoyed, I just want him to love them!!! and to be honest and selfish I'd prefer he'd love mine also, but I will step back if he wants me too :)

if his hair is curly then it shouldnt really be a problem dreading it at all. tell him to relax and his hair will lock up at the root eventually. no need to tie little bands on it. but if it is really loose a little back combing might not hurt. the only problem is if you try to backcomb the roots then you would have to be sliding down the rest of the backcombed hair on the tip and body of the dread. this might untangle some of it. also, you are supposed to wait at least a week before washing your hair when you first dread it. instead of using a bar of soap try some Dr. Bronners, or even some dreadhead or knottyboy shampoo if you are willing to pay that unreasonable price. and if he doesnt want to use any of those then tell him to take out his dreads, because you have to use the residue free stuff. the seasalt water and lemon juice sounds like a good idea, that stuff helps tighten lots

He needs to keep his hair clean and void of oils. Oils will prevent his hair from knotting...as knots will slip right out. (Oh, and I've never heard of a rule that says you should wait a week before washing...in fact, if you wait a week when you are first starting to dread, the knots will almost surely slip out...especially if the person has oily hair).

Washing with regular shampoo will leave a residue on his hair, also preventing it from dreading.

If he has thick curly hair, his hair will dread naturally on its own. All this work you're putting in, isn't really going to do much, as most backcombed hair falls out before it actually starts to really dread up anyway.

Patience is a virtue...you learn that if you have locks.
