Irish spirits (dunno if they're in any other countries) that take the form of ugly old hags. They can be heard screaming the night someone important or family is going to die. However, they have been mistaken with female foxes that often "moan" during mating season...I think. Now I think they're only old myths but I heard something one night that made me think differently. I was walking home with my cousin one night. I live in an extreme countryside so there was complete silence. Next thing we hear this loud screaming/whistling sound coming from over the fields, but it was pitch black so we couln't see anything. We both acknowledged it but made nothing of it as you always hear strange noises in the countryside. We hear it again, except louder and closer to us, maybe in the field opposite. We say "Did you hear that?" "Yes, yes I did" and start walking faster. A few moments later, as we're walking up the hill to the house we hear the same sound except it's right behind us. It obviously wasn't a fox because it would have had to travel for a long time to get that close and foxes dont follow people. I look over my shoulder but cant see anything. I say "Haha Roger, you're so funny!" thinking maybe it's my brother playing a trick. No reply. We freak out and run. When we got into the house Roger was there anyway. I think my grandmother died a while after this incident. Well, I just felt like posting that as it's a pagan belief and something I havn't been able to explain.
The Beansidhe (Woman Fairy) guards the familys of the old Milesian bloodlines....the old hag imagery came with the christians...much like the hag witch.... Its a chance that is what you heard....in these parts i would think panther though....until someone died shortly there after of course...just first reactions I guess... My uncle passed on Thursday....i wonder if he heard anything....
We don't have panthers here in Ireland haha. Ah I'm convinced it was her though, or else some weird bird that likes freaking people out but I've never been followed by a bird and birds don't sound like that. But then you've got a lot of stuff like that going on here. Especially in the west because it's quite rural. My condolences by the way.
When i was at my grandpa's house(he lives in the middle of nowhere) we heard holws and he said it was a banshe
