i'm starting to get into carving wooden pipes and i was wondering what the best type/s of wood are to work with in terms of smoothness, ease of carving, appearence and health. all comments welcome.
i'm a woodworker, and although i am not exactly sure about pipe carving, this is what i would consider. How loose the grain is, if it is too loose a grain, the smoke will probally slowly open them. Although it will be hard to work, use a good hard wood so it maintains its shape for as long as possible
http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184733 is the other thread you started on this topic. Gov, I've had good results with oak, even with its open grain. But as I said in the other thread cherry is my favorite. By the way, in the other thread CCN said that he is a woodworker and that walnut is toxic and advised against it. I've always thought that walnut was a safe wood. Do you have any thoughts about walnut and its toxicity?
